Did I handle this right? (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hi so I’m currently new ish to starbucks. I have been working here for almost a month now. I’m usually always scheduled to do drive through and sometimes ovens. My trainer I guess said once I master drive through i’ll focus on bar more. ( i frigging suck at bar doe so i understand 😗✌️)

I picked up drive through pretty quickly. I am familiar with the register system so I have mostly 70~80% of everything down. However, I guess I need help with customer interactions. I’m not shy but i’m also not like a people person.

i.e. I had an older lady yell @ me in drive through because she practically threw her change at me and I couldn’t catch it all. ( I caught a penny doe😀) I apologized and told her that she dropped her change. Then I rang her up and then gave her cash back with coins. She then proceeded to get upset with me and say I gave you change. I said oh I’m sorry you dropped it when giving it to me, because she must have not seen correctly or misplaced it. She gets visibly upsetter and says you’re kidding me. You’re lying. I said I’m sorry ma’am but look down you dropped your change. She proceeds to open her door looks out and see’s her change. She says, well then there is your tip, motioning to the fallen change. ( Normally I do the classic i’m sorry and apologize for their mistake but that’s so dumb. I am doing THEM a favor i’m not going to accept sh*t from them)

I call her out and say well that’s rude of you and not nice, (i said it so weird 😺) you made a mistake handing me the change. I apologize that I didn’t catch it quick enough but that’s not worth getting upset over. I close the window. I hand her drink. Have a good day! Do you need a straw, great here you are!

she replied with whatever.

Did I handle that well? I wanted to be polite but i’m not going to take some old bat’s crap lmao.

honestly a year ago i would’ve said that you could’ve handled it a little better and been more polite and “customer servicy” but now we are in a goddamn pandemic. if people are really gonna come to our establishment and be rude to us then they deserve it to be handed right back to them. we are busting our asses and putting ourselves, our families, and people we care abt in danger to make just above minimum wage. so at this point, don’t take anyone’s shit.

I will 100% co-sign being a little passive aggressive(I mean really it’s just the truth 🤷🏻‍♀️) to asshole customers 😬

This pandemic have made people really rude. I’m glad I’m not the only one noticing this. The regulars are the rudest. Before the pandemic I would say try a nicer approach but right now I would have felt like doing the same thing. I rather get a warning then take people’s crap for working during a pandemic. I think costumers interaction is a joke right now. I don’t want to connect with a customer, we shouldn’t be forced to connect with customers, especially in drive, when half the people don’t wear masks

COULDNT HAVE SAID IT BETTER. I Wish Customers Wore Their Masks Correctly.

If someone is being rude I tell them they are being rude. It’s just coffee and we shouldn’t have to take people being rude and demeaning towards us. I would’ve done the same thing and I’ve been at Starbucks for over 2 years.
