How long did it take you to feel comfortable and competent as a SS. Specifically day shift peak SS. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by UnrealisticThought
I was made a Shift Supervisor a couple of months ago. They started me out as a night shift supervisor, I feel like it took maybe a week and a half to get used to the flow and pace and everything that I was supposed to do. After about 3 weeks I got moved to day shift, and I’m not sure that I’m doing as well as I would like. It’s really really hard to balance all of the things I have to do (temps, counts, orders, cash management, setting the play, helping customers and partners, etc) while also being available to help my partners on the floor. We’re also short staffed on SS’s and our GM is currently running 3 stores so I hardly have any back up coverage as far as SS or GM go. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not inadequate at my job, I just want to get some feedback on how long it took you to feel comfortable and confident. & if you have any pointers or tips for me in getting better I’d love to hear them! Thank you!

It took me a solid month of only opening to get the hang of it. The biggest thing I learned was that you really have to delegate all of the morning duties. If your openers don’t have a routine assign them specific tasks you need done before peak so you can deal with all the lead stuff.
My routing goes: walk in turn off alarm, set safe, in the time it takes to set the safe do your milk count/temps, once safe is going count it, input safe count, count tills/ distribute them/ lock lock boxes, begin putting order away while doing that check pars, begin your order and walah your lead tasks are done. Once I finish with all this usually an hour worth of work I look at the line chart and begin breaking my partners and figuring out who goes where for peak.
I hope this helps! All comes with time, you’ll be killing it in no time.

That definitely helps! I’ve been keeping a list of things I need to do and checking them off as I go! I also keep a timer on my phone to hold me accountable so I’m never spending too much time on one thing. We’ve been getting an hour to open because of our state Covid Guidelines so that’s been helping a lot, but I’m still trying to get most of my stuff done in 30-45 minutes max. I think right now I’m mainly feeling overwhelmed by peak, but I’m learning to not “fight it,” so to speak (like feeling like I need to replace backups and fix minor things in that moment verses after peak is over). Letting the rush come and riding it out with my partners and worrying about everything after it slows down a little bit helps the stress but I always feel like I could be doing more..idk if that feeling will ever go away lol.
