Our district manager wants us to get customers' names in drive-thru. Are any other baristas experiencing pushes for better customer connections from corporate?

I work at a starbucks inside of a busy Target. Theres barely anytime to get those connections when we are slammed. If it is a very slow day yeah sure but it is a no go after that

We don’t take names, but we do know a lot of our regulars by name. We try to talk to them as much as we can, but we have one partner that will mess up our times and not do anything for herself because she’s just blabbering on in the window. There needs to be a happy medium between just tossing drinks at the people and chatting with each person for 15 minutes.
Our store consistently has the drive thru wrapped around the building out to the road, mobiles never stop, and lobby is full, even though we have zero seating. Our city needs another store, but they won’t. We’re 100% too busy for long customer connections.

I’m glad my manager doesn’t make us ask...for the time being anyways. That’s so awkward for everyone to ask...customer connections are so dumb. No matter how good the score is it’s never good enough anyways. Like does Starbucks think customers go to Starbucks continuously everyday just because they’re asked what their name is in the drive thru?

Yes, I think they think that. I think they think that a significant number of people come to Starbucks to socialize with the baristas. I don't think it's fair to require that we provide that to customers at $10 an hour. Also, I've been fussed at for saying negative things while connecting with customers, so it's not like you can have an honest connection with them anyway.

I think most of them feel awkward and can sense the forced interaction with them. Personally I literally avoid going into Lush stores since they have to go up to you and talk to you into buying things and it makes me feel uncomfortable. But they are made to do it even if the customer appears uncomfortable. It’s similar with Starbucks. The people who actually want to talk will, but most just want there stuff and go. And you’re right, our pay is pitiful for the expectations they have.

Yes- almost customers are ok with it Some are very rude. Personally I find asking for their name totally ridiculous

I do as well, for a ton of reasons. You know how some DTO baristas give their name? I used to when I was new because my trainer had recommended that I do. She wrote me a greeting which had my name in it and I used the greeting she had written. Well, one time I was saying my greeting and mentioning my name when this man interrupted me by saying, "--Yeah, I don't really need to know your name, but I heard y'all have good coffee here!" Everybody on the floor looked bewildered at how rude he was. I continued to be polite. The man asked for cinnamon on top of his drink and my shift supervisor insisted on making his drink and put so much cinnamon on top that you could not see the drink. Afterward, I laughed and said, "You made him take the cinnamon challenge. That man definitely kills people, he was humming to himself when he was at the window." Anyway, if some strange person like that comes through my drive-thru again, I'm not asking their name. Not worth bothering crazy people.
Anyway, when it comes to the asking-for-customers'-names-in-drive-thru rule, one of my shift supervisors was like, "Look, we gotta do it but we don't have to write their name down anywhere."

This was a company wide rollout a little over 20 months ago. Some DMs didn’t enforce it.
philosopher_cat_lady [OP]1 points2y ago
It's weird how they never changed the programming on their DTO computers to ask for names.
philosopher_cat_lady [OP]1 points2y ago
Our DM is relatively new, so that explains why he's enforcing it.
Alana_Chowdhury_2 points2y ago
Yeah because it makes wait time seem less
philosopher_cat_lady [OP]2 points2y ago
True, but it also takes more of the customer's time in that we're requiring them to talk to us more, if that makes sense.
Alana_Chowdhury_1 points2y ago
Yeah I get it. I know during training they taught us to base our interactions off the other person’s emotion so sometimes I won’t talk to them if they seem mad but I still get yelled at if I don’t talk to them 🤷♀️

We get names in the drive thru but it’s more about stalling so that the warmer (me!) can have time to get the food going, especially for the stupid wraps that take forever! So it’s kind of a win win in that situation.
philosopher_cat_lady [OP]2 points2y ago
One of my former shift supervisors would ask each DT customer who ordered a breakfast sandwich, wrap, or egg bites if they would like sriracha or avocado spread to go along with it in order to stall for time. But if Starbucks wasn't obsessed with drive-thru times in the first place, there'd be no need to stall.

I worked at a cafe store before I worked a drive thru and I try to take names when I'm on DTO because it helps stall A LOT but no one else in the store or even the district does it, so it's definitely optional where I am. but it helps out the DTR because they can say " hello Jennifer! your grande white mocha is $5.32" and it makes it easier to keep track of the orders, I don't mind that other partners don't do it tho

We have always done names in drive thru I’ve never gone to a store that doesn’t
philosopher_cat_lady [OP]2 points2y ago
I've never been asked my name at a drive-thru. We started taking names in drive-thru after reopening after quarantine because we were using a front register so that our baristas could social distance. The front register asks for a name so it was convenient to just ask what their name was. Names also helped keep orders organized since the DTR barista was not supposed to touch drinks in order to find orders. Every order was in the drive-thru at the time, so the names helped.
I don't like the idea of getting names in drive-thru for multiple reasons. Lots of people drove off before giving us their name because they weren't expecting the question. Lots of times I couldn't make out what their name was and would have to ask them to repeat it or spell it for me. I mainly think it's unnecessary and just gives us one more task to do for every single drive-thru order when we're already required to multitask like crazy because Starbucks likes to cut down on labor costs.

I start of with the whole “thank you for choosing starbucks my name is ———, can I get your name for the order?” And then you type name into ask me
