Pay it forward rant (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Kyenne_Pepper123
I hate when people pay it forward but not tip us. I know it shouldn’t bother me but it does because I know that slot of us baristas are either in high school or in undergrad and need the money. If you can pay $30 for your drink and for the car behind you, you can leave the store a $1 tip.
For those who are Starbucks customers, I it’s our job to make your drinks. But you leaving us a $1 tip each visit it telling us to keep the change means a lot to us partners, especially during this pandemic . That small gesture could help people afford their Uber home or to have student afford books next semester.
And for those who want to tell us to “get a better job” most of us can’t. And one of the biggest reasons is that a lot of us are teens and young adults in school. The best we can do is work in customer service or retail. We can’t get a “better job” if we don’t have a degree to get that job. Yes there is the military, but most people can’t join for various reasons (I can’t join due to health issues).
All in all I think my fellow baristas would really appreciate it if you guys could leave us a few cents as a tip the next time y’all visit us. It would really help us a lot.

If the job is important enough to be done, it’s important enough to be paid a living wage. There are plenty of baristas who aren’t in school and are older and need to pay bills. There are plenty of high school and college aged baristas who need to pay bills. This is a back breaking, mentally demanding, often degrading job (in terms of bending over backwards to give angry people a smile and the best service even when you are being berated)

Starbucks can and absolutely should be paying their baristas a living wage. I’ve never been paid so little for doing so much in my life, it’s absolutely ridiculous.

This is 100% true

Please start a campaign with this statement. I'll back it right away 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Edit: Have my free reward. It's not much but it's honest work 🤙🏼

When they leave me cash to pay for cars behind them I put that shit in the tip jar as soon as they leave.
Kyenne_Pepper123 [OP] 10 points 2y ago
That’s savage as hell
imcidenta11y -9 points 2y ago
That's theft. Sure, a tip would be awesome, but that's not what they offered the money for. They didn't gift it to *you*.
crunchynose 4 points 2y ago
Does it make a difference? I don’t think the people who come through our line in brand new truck and SUVS would appreciate it half as much as our baristas.
imcidenta11y -4 points 2y ago
I don't disagree with you, but it's still not your decision to make.

Must be nice to think an a suv is the barometer of $$$ so naive lol
crunchynose 2 points 2y ago
I don’t think having any SUV is a barometer of money, but a brand new 50,000$ SUV? Yeah they’ve got some money.
Kyenne_Pepper123 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
It’s actually not because their drink was already paid for

the ‘pay it forward’ chain starting every single time is just automatically no tips. i look forward to a mobile order coming up so i can break the chain. 🙃
hecaete47 24 points 2y ago
My Sm straight up won't let us do pay it forward chains during peak because it's so much chaos anyways. We just say "it's on us/random act of kindness/our POS is rebooting/etc." instead of saying "the car in front covered you"
shelmet23 14 points 2y ago
Your SM is the real MVP pay it forward is unnecessarily stress inducing and more of a hassle than anything else
hecaete47 6 points 2y ago
If you can get away with it, POS being down is the ultimate excuse because sometimes if you say it’s on us with no excuse, they’ll just pay it forward anyways
sandycat555 3 points 2y ago
I admit there were a couple times early on I "misunderstood" about paying for the next car, because I was getting so confused about the order sequence that one "pay it forward" would result in me giving out the wrong drinks.
Kyenne_Pepper123 [OP] 11 points 2y ago
There have been times where a mobile order had come and the person pays for the person behind the mobile order 🙃
CobaltLemon 9 points 2y ago
I just tell them no. I can’t see the next screen until the mobile clears
Millerboycls09 8 points 2y ago
Can confirm. Have had this happen
Maleficent-Town2957 4 points 2y ago
Sometimes If the next car is cheaper than the order the car she’d payed for... I don’t tell them.
SCathers14 10 points 2y ago
It’s hard when customers don’t carry cash anymore - no one thinks to tip with the card ... plus not all baristas get their fair tips when it’s done via card ... pay it forward makes people feel good about themselves when really it just makes the person who breaks the chain feel guilty.
EspressoPatr0num 7 points 2y ago
The whole Pay it forward concept in this scenario is the ultimate customers are more valuable than service workers trope. Kindness seems to be reserved for the consumer more often than not.
shelmet23 7 points 2y ago
I just make the executive decision to end it if I’m on DTR 😌

Alot of greedy people out there today. I've been saying this for months now. I hope we can get our message across.
