Pay Raise and Starting Rate BS(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by gjroberts93
I started a year ago at 9.14/hr and got the pay bump 10% to 10.05/hr, only to find out that all new hires in my district are being hired at 10/hr. I’m glad they can make that money but what the hell, I’ve been with the company a year and I’m only worth 5 cents more than a new hire?

It is shocking, I know. After paying for health insurance, my last paycheck was $73. Honestly, one SSV shift is worth way more stress than $73. The pressure we are under is phenomenal.

I fully believe that Starbucks will only pay a livable wage once the federal government takes action and raises the minimum wage (which it clearly has zero interest in doing). The ideal world that Regional Directors, Vice Presidents and above would want is literally anything above whatever local municipality’s lowest legal available pay rate. They will always (and for the last 8 years or so) make it the lowest possible number above minimum. If they did the right thing and really set the bar like they use to do 10+ years ago they would publicly support/enact a $15 minimum wage across every American market no matter what the cost of living is. They know they can’t do that for a few reasons 1. The stock would take a huge hit and most leadership(Dm and above’s bonus structure is very dependent on stock price)2. To be able to make up the difference in lost capital they would either force automation more quickly(less partners on the floor or less available hours)3. Do what Amazon did which is get rid of all other available benefits including health insurance which has been a bedrock foundation in Starbucks hiring/retention system for close to 30 years.
TLDR:Starbucks won’t do the right thing anymore unless the government makes them. Starbucks👏isn’t👏special.
