Hi guys! So my managers have been getting on me a lot for customer connections, because i'm not the greatest at it. I just don't know how to keep a conversation with a customer and I am awkward. Does anyone have some tips I can use to help me improve on this? (self.starbucksbaristas)

Yes!

It's easy. Say these things.

"I see. tell me more" nod your head in response and ask same question again.

Or say "That must have felt ( fill in emotion) ..like "awesome" or "sad" or " challenging."

Done.

I just tell them that they ordered my favorite drink (even tho it’s probably not) and if they are interested in “x” they may like to try “y” next time.

Also everyone loves a compliment.

Force yourself to ask “how are you?” It took me 2 years to work up courage to do this but a lot of the time people will start having a short conversation with you if you ask. Or “what are you doing today?” If they say work “where do you work?” It makes me feel so awkward but .. at least I don’t get in trouble anymore..

I’m always on customer facing positions. Small talk is your key. The weather, the weekend coming up, the holidays, comment about their order.

Anything to make them feel like you’re not just a robot at the window or counter.

Bonus points when you learn to remember others and their names or what you talked about previously.

I have a regular who comes through and we talk about animal sciences because I’m a pre vet major and she’s a tech.
