Anywhere from a week to never. And it will depend on whether or not that store needs to hire anyone. My SM reviews and follows up on new applications every monday. But he only calls people he thinks he wants to hire, there are many applications that he just doesn't bother responding to.

I waited about two weeks and then called a couple times before I got the store manager. Even if a store is hiring sometimes they won’t know someone applied until they follow up. If your friend calls and the SM isn’t there they should just ask when they’ll be in and keep calling! They should be persistent until they’re told by the manager that they aren’t hiring.

There's not really a "usual" - anything can happen really! Sometimes you can get a call back after a couple of days, other times the manager might be busy with other things and not get around to responding to applications for a week or more. When I applied I didn't hear back for over 2 weeks because one store wasn't hiring and the other was between managers, so the new manager called me once she finally checked the queue. If you want your application to be noticed, it sometimes helps to call or go in when the store isn't busy and introduce yourself to the manager.

It depends on if the store has an actual labor need or not. Starbucks accepts applications even if there are no current open positions.
