Thank you Starbucks baristas!(self.starbucksbaristas)

Let me preface this post by saying that I am not a barista, just a huge fan of Starbucks. I work in the hotel industry and love reading the stories in here because I can relate at times, and also I like to know how I can be the best customer possible. I can’t believe how many bad stories I hear about customers treating baristas like garbage. But coming from the hospitality industry myself, I can say that I empathize greatly.
Anyway, today I went to my Starbucks and I got to the window and had my phone ready to scan to pay for my drink. The girl at the window said that the car in front of me paid for my drink, which was awesome and nice! But then the girl asked I wanted to put it forward for the car behind me, whose total was a little more than mine. Honestly in the past I probably would have said yes, but I’ve learned so much from being here that I said no, I don’t, and promised I’d be back to leave a cash tip for the team. I kept my word, I came back 10 minutes later after getting cash while at the store, and brought it inside to give to the barista at the front register. The barista was so kind and asked if I wanted to give some of that to pay for another customers order, and immediately I said no, this is for you guys! I only had $20 but I immediately wished I had even more because of the way they all lit up. It was 10000x better than paying for the person behind me in t he drive thru. 10/10 recommend. Thank you all for everything you do, best of luck out there during this holiday season!

Fucking awesome!
Went to Starbucks the other day in Torrance, which is a pretty well off area in LA county. Placed an order on a drink and the people were so nice that I tipped 5 bucks, which made me feel good, but pretty sad, because that was the only money in the tip jar.
Hopefully they just pull it out so no one steals it.
And I've always said I'd do the same thing if this ever happened to me as well, OP

I used to live In Torrance, they most likely empty the tip jars often.

Ours have a habit of walking away.
I'm sure it had just been emptied out.

*Bless your soul.* The other day we had a grand total of 26 people "pay it forward," none of them tipped. The reason most of us work so much during holidays is for the tips, and although they, of course, aren't guaranteed, it's people like you that make me want to go to work. To be kind. To even, dare I say, have that kindness rewarded. We have a saying at my Starbucks, it goes a lil something like this. Customer: "Oh my gosh, I'm so grateful for you guys!" Barista: "Oh, so you're going to tip?" Customer: "No why would I do that?" 😶

What the hell... honestly I’m shameless. I’d ask that $100 guy if he would be okay with making half of it a tip.

Oh my god. I’m sobbing. Tell him to get the app and then he can tip with gift cards.

Yes OP!!
Paying it forward to the people working thats what its all about.
bookishfox7 points2y ago
Oh my god, I would’ve cried. I’ve been really overwhelmed lately, realllly close to quitting. Customers like you (not just because of the money) are what make it worth it. Customers who are genuinely appreciative and realize that we’re human too. Thank you
Batgrill5 points2y ago
Why would you pay for the next person? Is that common in the US?
mycatsaremylife_ [OP]3 points2y ago
Yeah it’s super common, the movement is called pay it forward where someone decides to pay for their own order plus the person who is behind them, and it usually starts a chain reaction that keeps going on and on. Sometimes it’s awkward because in my situation my drink was $5 and the person behind me was like $9.
Batgrill3 points2y ago
I think tipping is nicer, but it's also a nice gesture (:
SelocAvrap3 points2y ago
Tipping is also less work for the baristas bc they can track which order goes to which car properly
Batgrill2 points2y ago
Good to know, thanks! (:

i got my first tip at my store yesterday on the window and i’ve been a barista for starbucks for over a year now. tips in starbucks in the UK are quite rare and since we’re card only at the moment, no one brings cash out. but i’m honestly so thankful for the customers i have at my store. i have some bad days with customers being nasty etc but my regulars have a place in my heart. happy holidays from UK starbucks❄️❄️

I joined this subreddit about a year ago, long before I got hired at Starbucks (I got hired about 3 months ago). It’s kind of ironic that I ended up getting a job here.

Customers like you are the reason why I still am a barista, I love connecting with customers that actually treat us like a actual human
SpotloeM3 points2y ago
as a long time barista (4 years) i will say on behalf of all of us, thank you so much!! it makes such a big difference to us!! and we strive to make your days better and it feels so nice when our patrons take the time to think of us as well!! 🥰

You’re amazing ❤️. We appreciate you❤️. When we have customers do random acts of kindness, trust me, we remember. I’m sure they will bring you up well after Christmas. Like “hey you remember the woman that brought us the $20?!” Even if it was $2 it still means a ton to us. A lot of times people in the drive thru say they’ll be back, but never do; and that’s okay☺️. But anyways, you rock! Happy holidays! ❤️

You’re a superstar!
weirdalt1821 points2y ago
I’ll tell you, as a barista, most times someone “pays it forward”, they say “Oh, cool. Thanks.” Then drive off. Your tip to the staff is very appreciated, and they will remember it. Thank you.

Thank you so much! I wish we had MORE customers like you 🥺🖤
