Am I sugar coating my job to myself and others? TLDR; What’s the worst part about the job? (self.starbucksbaristas)

It’s management / corporate for me.

I’ve watched the quality of our merchandise get worse over the years. I’ve seen staple products that customers always bought from their local store be removed and are now harder for them to find. I’ve seen our focus shift from real customer connections to the number that shows up on their reports. I’ve seen prices for drinks go up astronomically without seeing an improvement to the product itself or much of that put back into partners or stores. I’ve been told over and over that my feelings about my health and safety have to come second to customer satisfaction.

That being said, I love Starbucks. I love making drinks, I love my regulars, I love my coworkers, I love the knowledge and appreciation for coffee and the craft that working for this company has given me. Hell, even my manager has been one of my biggest advocates through a very difficult time in my life. But Starbucks as a corporation lost my loyalty a long time ago, and unfortunately, there’s very little they can do to get it back at this point.

I can get behind this. As a LONG LONG LONG time customer before I ever started, I can agree that the prices/merch changes have mostly come out of nowhere and had no positive impact on the customers. And now especially hearing that it hasn’t had a positive impact on partners either, I can totally understand the feeling towards corporate. Thank you for sharing!

Green bean of ~2 months here, same feeling as you. I enjoy talking to customers on the job as well. Don’t understand the complaints toward the job, but I feel like attitudes can vary based on store (management and co-workers as well as volume) and whether or not Starbucks is a job or more of a long-term career for you (I’m currently doing this while in school).

I’ve been told/seen on this sub that that feeling will fade, which I already expected having been through my fair share of jobs, but so far I am still really enjoying it.

I don’t think this is necessarily true. I’ve been with Starbucks for about a year and a half and I still love it. Every single day? Probably not. There are definitely days I go home and wish I had never gone in. Crappy customers? Occasionally, although not even a 10th of what I’ve read about here. It’s a hard job, for sure, but I like it.
