Sharing tips question (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hey everyone, been a partner since 2007! This store I work at now does separate tips for thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and was closed on Christmas. I have always been under the impression that if you want Christmas tips you volunteer to work Christmas. Furthermore is this allowed? The week of Christmas is always busy and I think everything is a group effort. The morning setting up the night and the night setting up the morning.. Partners at my store think that, if you didn’t get scheduled to work your not entitled to tips on thanksgiving or Christmas. I think that’s like saying if you work in the afternoon your not entitled to tips in the morning. Success is a team effort. My manager is siding with the 99% of the team that wants this because she thinks it’s more fair. I feel like there’s got to be rules about this. I said I would work these days and didn’t get scheduled. So these tips are now only available USF your scheduled to get them. That is was seems not fair to me.

The benefit to working on Christmas has always been they keep those tips. That’s why Christmas was sign up only. If your store included thanksgiving on that, it had to have a majority vote.

However, the Christmas one has always been the rule at every store. It was also in the partner guide before it was updated this year.

It's not about how busy it is or the work put into prepare for the day, it's about the people working on Christmas/Thanksgiving who specifically volunteered and are often missing out on time celebrating a holiday with their families. It's an incentive to get people to volunteer for those days (like time and a half).

We get time and a half, I volunteered to work, but wasn’t scheduled. So then access becomes about who the manager decides get to work. Thanksgiving isn’t a volunteer day and was a day I usually work. Same with Christmas Eve. Also my store was not open Christmas this year but was in the past. Next year, are the Christmas Eve tips separate from the Christmas tips and the weekly tips?

Thanksgiving and Christmas eve tips depend on your store. Tips for both of those days were treated as normal weekly tips where I work. If the majority in your store think it's more fair for holiday workers to get holiday tips, unfortunately that's just how it's going to be at your store unless you convince anyone. They're not breaking any rules.

I think all tips should be divided daily among those who worked that day, not just Christmas.

We got forced to work Christmas. So there wasn’t a “volunteer” effort

This has been the way it worked at every store I've been at. Xmas tips can be as much as a whole week of tips, so that's the justification that's been given. I don't really think it's fair, especially since some partners care about xmas and others don't.
