How many hours do full time students get?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by goldenharrie
Hey everyone! i’m a full time university student who is having a hard time figuring out the appropriate number of hours to have that would allow me to balance work and assignments, especially since technically my schedule is “open” since i don’t have set class times. and so i currently have a full open availability and i try to shape my time around work, which i do not like the idea of tbh. I’m just wondering how fellow student partners shape their schedule, esp with online classes, so i can get an idea of what to do since i’m currently getting close to 30 hrs and idk if that’s bad :(

It’s whatever you’re comfortable with. I usually take about 12-14 credit hours and work about 15-20 hours a week, but that’s totally up to you and the intensity of your courses

yeah i figured it depends on the classes i’m taking, issue is classes resume jan 11, so by the time i figure out my availability i’d be about two weeks in and i don’t want to have a bad start with the semester smh i think i’ll wait this out and see how things play out before i make any changes, thank you so much!!

I work 25-30 hrs a week and go to ASU, and I have plenty of free time/time to do school. I also have a second job currently. When I was going to physical classes before I transferred I worked 15-20 with a second job at school as well.
It all really depends on how well you are able to balance your time and how disciplined you are with your school work. Good luck!

omg that’s a lot of work props to you! i feel like i’d be able to balance things out, it’s only when i get burnt out i start slacking which i want to avoid doing this coming semester. i think i’ll give things a chance as they are at the moment, and try and figure out my availability as the semester progresses. thank you! :)

I think that’s a good idea. I’d start small- like 3 shifts a week or so, and see if you can handle it first. Finding that balance is important, especially starting out!

It’s just based on what you think you can handle. I would say test it out for the first couple weeks of the semester before the big assignments hit and if it’s too much then ask your SM if you can cut back/ change your availability.
Last semester, I had open availability and 9 credits of grad school (full time) and was scheduled 37-40 and did a lot of OT (due to one of our other shifts being out for 3 weeks).
For this upcoming semester I asked my SM if I could have Mondays consistently off (since I haven’t been scheduled on Mondays for the last 7 weeks or so) and that way I have one guaranteed “homework” day.
With online school it’s all about being flexible. I’m our primary closing shift so I usually work on stuff before work and since I close, if I need to stay up until 2am to finish stuff, I’m able to. I’m pretty used to it since I’m starting my 3rd semester of grad school and I worked about 50 hours/week during my undergrad. You’ll find what works best for you in terms of studying. I prefer to study at night but with my house situation, it’s easier to work in the morning when I’m home alone.
I wish you the best going forward!

omg thank you so much!! this definitely puts things into perspective, i wanted to try and have sundays off but my request was denied, so i’m thinking i’d do some day during the week, like your mondays off, just to completely focus on course work that day! i found in my first semester i was more likely to study in the mornings, but the issue is i prefer opening to closing ahah. i’ll figure it out a few weeks in :))

I did a full time engineering undergrad (15-20 STEM credits consistently) while working 24-40 hours during the school year and 60-100 hours in summers (multiple summer gigs). As others have said it’s really down to your comfort level. If I had it to do over again I wouldn’t work more than two shifts at the bux during the year.

I took 21 credits and worked 20-30 hours. I nearly died.
goldenharrie [OP]1 points2y ago
oof that definitely sounds terrible, mad respect for getting through that! i’m not taking that many credits but regardless of that, it’s still challenging (for me at least) to balance the two :/

It’s challenging, no matter what! And I worked my way up to that level of insanity, first I started with one opening shift on Saturday while taking 12 credits, and slowly added days through the course of my time in school. (I never took more than 13 credits at once until that last semester, where it was do it now or wait a full calendar year to graduate.) Don’t hesitate to talk to your SM about lightening your load. I believe in you! 💜

I’m a full time undergrad taking 15-17 units and working ~25 hours and I am suffering

aah felt that, this year had been super difficult, especially for us working students. i’ve come to realize based on other’s replies that if one is able to decrease their hours, to go ahead and do that as post-secondary is extremely demanding and requires quite a lot of attention and dedication. as long as you’re successful in both, it’ll pay off in the end. props to you for doing both and good luck with the rest of your semester/courses!!
