Advice from my fellow baristas (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Lagertha-queen
So for the past 5 weeks I have been scheduled to do the clean play and I’m scheduled an additional 2 more weeks of it. I don’t mind doing it every once in a while but doing it every week has been really exhausting. I’m always scheduled to do the full 8 hours, I never get to leave early when I finish early (though others do all the time, and then I’m always scheduled to come in early the next morning and I’m just beat. How should I approach my manager about taking a break from doing it all the time? I feel like it’s a position that should be rotated and not put on one persons shoulders. I’m just afraid of loosing my hours and taking a big cut because I don’t want to do this every week. Any advice on how to handle this would be great

That was a problem at our store. This one girl was worked to the bone as she was scheduled every week, twice a week, for cleanplay. There was one point that she broke down in the middle of her shift and started crying because her hands were bleeding. She talked to the SM but not much has changed. You need to be firm when requesting for rotations. It’s absolutely not fair to put it on one person, bu SMs often do it because the person they schedule already knows what’s being done so it’s easier and faster for them.

I think the first solution would be to reach out to your fellow partners and see if anyone would be willing to cover the morning shift after the clean play, that way you can get a break! You’d also just have to set a time to sit down and talk with your manager. I don’t know how comfortable your manager makes you guys feel at work and what not, but it’d be good to discuss how you’re feeling tired and request that the clean play be alternated every other week versus you getting it back to back. You could also mention the back to back close and open shifts that you’re getting. If your shifts are within 8 hours of each other then your manager shouldn’t be doing that, it’s a violation or something I can’t remember.
