Told a woman to please keep her mask on while ordering(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by chuhai-drinker
She proceeded to give me the longest staredown from over her daughter's head while her daughter finished up ordering. She refused to unlock eyes from me so I looked back up at her and smiled. Still giving me the nastiest look, she says to me, "That was very rude." I didn't respond. I'm tired. I'm so tired. I'm grown. I'm not your child.
What do you do when customers throw tantrums about being asked to wear their mask correctly?
tamaotaki_0186 points2y ago
You’re the one not wearing the mask? And I’m rude? ✨no are you 5?
GrandpaCody80 points2y ago
Before I quit I just yelled at people from behind the counter as they walked in and kept repeating myself as annoying as possible until they left to grab a mask or ask if we had any disposables
Daisy71675 points2y ago
(I work at Target) I tell them to wait outside and I’ll ask for someone who is comfortable helping them wo a mask. Someone never arrives.
Agartha338 points2y ago
How do you not get fired? We were told not to say anything, for fear of being fired.
Daisy71626 points2y ago
They’re breaking the rules and not wearing the mask, they’re not going to go tell on me for enforcing the rules so I just do whatever I want to keep myself, my family and other guests safe even if Target doesn’t enforce it.
aaaugustaaa21 points2y ago
I learned recently we are actually allowed to tell people, Target just doesn’t want us to know because it could look bad on them lol
Daisy71611 points2y ago
My SD said it’s bc Target doesn’t want us to get physically assaulted by unhinged idiots. Makes sense but I’m always careful to keep my distance as I politely ask them to keep their mask pulled up while they’re in the store. I keep moving past them and don’t stop to harass them, but I’m not going to ignore their bullshit.

Wait, what???
philosopher_cat_lady1 points2y ago
Ugh
PumpkinNoSpice50 points2y ago
I personally say it twice. Then I say “per (state) laws, you must wear a mask. Since you refused to do so, I’m refusing you service. The exit is behind you. NEXT!” 😇. Last time I did that, the entire line clapped and cheered lmao. Greatest thing ever lol

Everybody be easily offended these days. Customers are either ignorant and disrespectful or fragile snowflakes. They wouldn't last a day working as a barista.
MonstrousGiggling1 points2y ago
I feel kinda bad but we had some recent green beans only last like a 2 weeks, and my buddy was like "Yeaaaaah big shock, who thought they were gonna make it" and honestly I laughed and couldn't help but agree.
Some people aren't made for the service industry or the food industry. Gotta have a high tolerance for bullshit.
Radiant_Log_434228 points2y ago
One time I literally screamed at a man for this so loud the birds outside of the store flew away.
Dragonfruitme22 points2y ago
Don’t serve them :) gets them really triggered
katia_082819 points2y ago
We got in trouble at my store because we weren’t “nice enough” when asking people to wear a mask like... I’m sorry I’m supposed to be extra nice to someone who clearly only cares about themselves??
lewabwee1 points2y ago
Hey Starbucks says you don’t have to do anything that makes you feel unsafe.
Tisroero1 points2y ago
If they don't give a fuck about others safety, I don't give a fuck about being nice to them.
_paperbackhead_19 points2y ago
Whenever we have customers at my store that try this or try to argue about not wearing a mask I will offer a disposable mask. If they refuse then I point out that they are acting childish and refuse service or, one of my managers normally will ask them to leave at that point. We do not tolerate childish behavior or complete rudeness at my store. We’re still people at the end of the day and if you can not follow a simple rule, please stay home.

Moments like this are exactly why I quit. Asking for basic human decency is considered rude most of the time, even when it's not related to the pandemic. I had to ask one customer repeatedly to stop calling me "boy".
colonade178 points2y ago
I refuse to move forward in the conversation until they wear their mask correctly. I don't care how many time I have to ask someone to wear their mask correctly, you're not getting your coffee until that mask covers your mouth and your nose.

It's not rude, it's just new. And this woman is so ignorant and has such terrible adaptation skills that because someone's asking her to do something that she isn't used to be asked to do she thinks it's rude. Or maybe she's just an entitled bitch who gets offended any time someone questions something she's done. People do all kinds of rude and illegal things at our stores. If I were to voice my opposition to one of them, for example littering in my drive-thru, I'm sure they would think I'm rude because, one, they're not used to anyone giving enough of a shit to speak up about their behavior and, two, we're really in a lower power position than they are, as their food service employee, and are therefore always supposed to be "polite" to them.
To answer your question, my reaction will depend on what their tantrum is like. My former shift supervisor has told customers, "I'm sorry you felt like I was being rude to you." Other times, the customers are so aggressive that I'm truly scared to continue to enforce the mask rule and just ignore them. They'll be leaving the store soon anyway since our indoor seating's not available and it's just not worth getting verbally abused over, at least from my personal perspective.
I would like to think that I would have responded to your customer, "I'm just enforcing our policy." The thing is I usually chicken out of those kinds of situations because they happen ALL THE TIME and they're an incredible amount of emotional labor. I used to give more of a shit than I do now. I got some internal backlash while enforcing the mask policy because it wasn't the top priority of my shift supervisors, which it totally should be as it's a big safety issue. I also don't think it should even be my fucking job to enforce it. We should have a security guard who is as well-trained in customer relations as a shift supervisor is or simply not let customers inside. One of the reasons I give less of a shit is the time of the learning curve has passed. That woman didn't give a shit about your mask policy or to wear a mask properly because she just plain doesn't give a shit about people. And she's not going to start tomorrow if I try to enforce the mask policy on her. I've now accepted that people are going to jeopardize my safety at my place of work everyday. It's sad but true.
TL:DR Customer: That was very rude Me: Because being rude is bad but risking giving a deadly virus to a person who's at work is ok
writer_savant6 points2y ago
No offense, but fuck that bitch.
maemac3 points2y ago
I would just repeat “sorry it’s policy” and smile
Month_Puzzleheaded3 points2y ago
I have asked customers to keep their mask up, after the second time I walked to the back to get the SM and she ask them to leave.
lily-amber1 points2y ago
i’m glad you stood up to her. She doesn’t have any common sense clearly so don’t take her words seriously!! We are entitled to feel safe at work.
ih8yogurt1 points2y ago
I’d respond with “so is not wearing your mask”

It’s not our job to tell children to keep their masks on. It should be a well known fact by now, but if I ever get a customer like you, let’s just say Good Luck Charlie.
creepygirl42015 points2y ago
Bro it’s literally a safety issue. And it’s not just for the baristas it’s for the safety of the other customers as well. So their job is quite literally to ask them to wear a mask. Not to shut up about it and let them risk the safety of everyone in the building.
