Today a borrowed partner who doesn’t typically work at a drive thru store asked a customer to put her mask on next time as a “courtesy”. Normally we just let these people go about their lives and while I love our customers who do put their masks on at the window, I’d say a majority of our customers don’t. No one at my store has ever said anything to a customer about it unless they physically come into our store to order or pick their mobile order up.
About 15 min later my shift supervisor gets a call from said customer about how she felt attacked in her own car, etc. SS says we’re not allowed to say anything about it to the customers but on this sub I’ve definitely seen folks say they have Starbucks issued signs that say “wear your mask and have your payment ready at the window” or something similar. I guess I was just wondering 1) how/if we can put in a request for these signs and 2) if anyone has experienced something similar and if so, what you did?
Not sure if I just needed to vent or what exactly I’m looking for here. This was my first shift of 2021 and approx 30 min into the shift so it was just a little frustrating.

I think some stores had to put up signs if wearing a mask in the drive thru was mandatory where they lived. In some places it is mandatory even if you are in your own car. But if it isn’t mandatory where you Live you shouldn’t be saying anything to customers in drive thru.

Mandatory as in like, the grocery store and gym and stuff? If that’s the case we should have those signs. Customers aren’t allowed in our store without masks, so I was just curious if there was a difference for the dt.

Sorry I meant like mandatory everywhere even if you are in your own vehicle going to a drive thru. Some cities have made it mandatory to wear a mask in the drive thru

Where I lived earlier on in the pandemic, it was part of the mask mandate that people needed to wear them through the DT, so we asked people to when the ordered. Where I live now, it’s not, so people don’t, and we don’t say anything to them.

i mean the general phrase in most states is “wear a mask in public if you can’t keep a distance of 6 feet” and a car in a DT is not at all 6 feet from the barista taking an order. it doesn’t matter if she’s in her car, if the window is down she’s not distanced so rlly people should put a mask on whenever they need to have their window down to speak

It depends on where you live. My city’s mask mandate specifically includes masks in drive thrus. If your local government has no such mandate, then by Starbucks policy, you’re allowed to not wear a mask while in the drive thru or while doing curbside.

It’s not mandated in our city but we still require masks in drive thru at our store!!!

How do you guys enforce this?
bimmer0071 points2y ago
There is a sign on the window that we point to if they aren’t wearing one and don’t open it until they put one on

My store is cafe only but we do have curbside. Often times as soon as I walk out there with one persons drinks every car rolls their window down hoping it’s theirs haha. Well when I’m bringing it to said car and they’re wearing their mask I just express my appreciation for them wearing a mask and that it means a lot to us and it makes us feel much more comfortable working in this pandemic and thanks for caring about not only your health but ours. Most people are like oh no problem but those other people have their windows down and are listening so they sometimes put on their mask too haha. Try just thanking customers who are wearing one, especially if they are like oh shoot and rush to put on their mask before rolling down their window or something. Other customers hear, and it helps customer connection scores cause they feel complimented by keeping us safe (should be standard but hey do what you gotta do)

Totally! This is something I always make a point to do in the dt!
