- people who apparently don’t have common sense and go past the makeshift mobile order counter we have set up to directly grab their drinks themselves
- people who say “I think that’s mine but idk” and point to a mobile order.... @ customers can you dumb mfs stop doing that JUST TELL ME YOUR NAME & STOP ACTING LIKE I’M SUPPOSED TO KNOW YOU AND YOUR ORDER PERSONALLY
- people who ask “is this mine???” without simply.... reading the damn cup
- people who get soy and then ask you if it’s soy when you hand it out
- people who get upset when they ordered more than one thing & I hand out one part first as if I get paid barely above minimum wage to scam old hags out of overpriced lattes and croissants
- people who keep pulling their masks below their noses to talk
- men who keep mumbling and then get mad at you bc you couldn’t catch it
- people tapering off at the end of their sentences in general so you get to hear all the customizations and not the actual core drink itself
- people who consistently order the same drink with the same customizations and then don’t tell the cashier what it is so when someone newer is making it ofc it’s not what they wanted
- people who “forget” to mention they wanted a non-dairy milk or extra caramel drizzle or extra foam, etc
- people who say “the other Starbucks doesn’t charge me for syrup” WELL GUESS WHAT MF we’re not them!!!!!!!!!
- people who get mad when someone in front of them in line takes too long so now we have to emotionally soothe them
- people who don’t tell the cashier they want a water and instead bother the bar barista (oftentimes the primary one) for it
in conclusion: the customer is always wrong
edit: I haven’t come back to this post in a while and was surprised by the upvotes & comments! I was honestly pretty pissed when I made this list & it’s validating to see that I’m not alone in my frustrations & that other people agree with me. Thanks yall!
bonus: - the smartasses who boss you around about their drink that you’re making except it isn’t even their drink & now you have to restrain yourself from tossing the entire thing over the sneeze guard right at their face because fuck you you know NOTHING jon snow
gabbysafari28 points2y ago
When you ask the name of their mobile order and they list out everything they ordered instead... JUST TELL ME YOUR NAME PLS!!! & also when you hand out just one of their items and they’re like “I also had this and this and...” like I KNOW! I CAN ONLY MAKE SO MANY THINGS AT ONCE! CHILL!!!
SelocAvrap4 points2y ago
Ngl there were a couple times I told customers "you got three drinks, but I have two hands"
Idk how I got away with that but they honestly needed to hear that
rmd19976 points2y ago
Recently some lady in the drive called me a “smart-ass asshole” for saying this to her lmao. It was the end of my shift so ofc she made me cry but I don’t regret it
student10247 [OP]3 points2y ago
wow i wish.... if only older adults being upset didn’t trigger the hell out of me lol
SelocAvrap3 points2y ago
Oh oof, sounds like you gotta find the partner who's the Healthy Confrontation Friend
That's what I was back when I worked for the siren; I had partners ask me to catch and release bugs &come get me to tell off antimaskers, plus I'd jump in whenever someone was mistreating a barista
student10247 [OP]2 points2y ago
Yeah I do :/ Unfortunately I tend to just freeze and go really quiet (if it’s not that bad I can at least manage a fawn response, but sometimes....) and then hope someone notices me. And on top of that, I’m still not comfortable with my coworkers except for like 3 people, and I don’t always work with them :/ *sigh*
The only thing I miss about my old store is how comfortable I felt with everyone (minus my asshole manager & assistant manager lmao)
You’re great for doing that and even if you’ve never helped me directly, I appreciate you for being there for people like me ❤️
babystartwink23 points2y ago
I get so annoyed by the “people who get soy and then ask you if it’s soy when you hand it out” too!!! like do they think we don’t know how to read????
student10247 [OP]15 points2y ago
i guess when you’re someone who can’t read, you assume everyone else can’t read either! 😐
idkcassie13 points2y ago
this one is the only one that doesn’t upset me. because genuinely sometimes mistakes happen and a drink can get made with a dairy milk even if we ring it up w/ a nondairy. some people have allergies/dietary restraints and want to ensure they know what they’re consuming.
edit: a word
angelcay18 points2y ago
You’d be suprised how many times I’ve asked baristas if it’s soy milk during the handoff and they take the drink back to remake it because it wasn’t made with soy milk.... sorry I want to make sure I get the right milk so I don’t kill my stomach from dairy milk. But I can definitely agree with ur other points
tenthwalker14 points2y ago
If you take it, step outside to remove your mask and taste it (please don't take your mask off in a grab and go store right in front of other people's orders and the barista you might be breathing on to taste it) and it clearly isn't soy, let your barista know and we are supposed to automatically put remakes ahead of all other drinks in our queue to make the moment right and because you technically were there first. Especially if we're busy, asking the barista this at handoff comes across as condescending and interrupts their flow (they've likely already started working on and thinking about two other orders, according to the sequencing we're trained to follow) when it's already generally a stressful situation. Assuming it is already wrong comes off as a personal affront to us, and will make the barista a lot less friendly and expedient in the remake process. If it's consistently an issue at the same location, bringing it up to a manager is absolutely a constructive way to help fix it going forward, and you'll likely get a recovery card for $4 off next time too. I can't have dairy either, so I get it, but it really is fucking annoying as a barista when people do this, OP is definitely not the only one of us that feels that way
idkcassie11 points2y ago
i know I’m gonna get downvoted but honestly? no it shouldn’t mess up the flow at all. it’s a simple yes or no question. some people have allergies and CANNOT taste it or else they’ll have a reaction. it’s the customers responsibility to order their drink to their needs and ours, as their barista, to make their drink correct. that being said, sometimes mistakes happen and we make drinks with dairy by mistake and don’t realize until it’s pointed out. a customer simply ensuring their drink was made correct shouldn’t be condescending at all especially if it pertains to a dietary need, especially when the barista just has to answer yes or no. part of handing off drinks is asking customers if they need anything else & making that connection, ensuring BEFORE they walk away that the drink is what they want.
DirigibleUme8 points2y ago
%100 agree. My friend has a severe allergy, not intolerance, to dairy. There's one barista at my store that isn't super great with paying attention to the milk, and more than once has given my friend a drink without the non-dairy. I've seen this barista do this multiple times, too, to other people. (Barista is very touchy to criticism so it is an ongoing problem) The more annoying thing to me is people staring at me making drinks and say "that's soy milk right? For my drink?" And I check to see if I'm even making their drink and I missed something but I'm almost always on someone else's drink. That's annoying. Not double checking that an allergen isn't in their drink, as per how they ordered it.
idkcassie2 points2y ago
totally agree! I’ve done it to and i always prefer to be told I’m making a drink wrong BEFORE the customer leaves. it gives me a chance to fix the mistake before giving them the wrong drink. though, it kind of does make me laugh when they watch me make a drink that’s definitely not theirs and start trying to correct me >.<
student10247 [OP]2 points2y ago
Wow this is a great way to articulate why I feel so annoyed by it - already assuming we made it wrong is a really annoying feeling and it throws off my concentration. I get that people have dairy allergies, and I get that some people aren’t careful about their milks, but for me personally as someone who rarely messes up milks? It’s annoying as hell. It could be “is this whole milk” or “is this nonfat” too, but I put soy because it seems to be the soy people that ask the most (interestingly enough, not the almond or coconut or oat people)
applesandshananas12 points2y ago
me: what's your name? them: *points* that one
Working at Starbucks has allowed me to meet so many people named "that one," a long-lost name only awoken by that first sip feeling
Abrakadanni12 points2y ago
“Is this soy” people drive me mad, especially people who go on about how they really can’t have any dairy but are getting sauces with dairy or asking for whipped cream like... you can enjoy non dairy milk and not lie about it? Such a weird thing to lie about.
krystilena0 points2y ago
People who ask if its soy have received dairy too many times. They ask because someone made a mistake and now they have trust issues. Get over it. They will always ask don't let it annoy you
Abrakadanni2 points2y ago
How about you get it over it kiddo I’m gonna complain about whatever I want cause I make minimum wage :)
krystilena2 points2y ago
That's fair. Its nice to be able to vent somewhere. Don't give the customers that kind of power though! They don't all suck but enough do to merit this list which is hilarious and brought me back to my barista days.
Pies-in-the-Skies10 points2y ago
Add to the list: People who wait in the drive through for you to hand out their order, then, “Oh, can I also get a panini, or egg bites, or let me add this frappuccino.”
student10247 [OP]2 points2y ago
I’ve never worked at a drive thru one but I can only imagine the hell that must be
VictoriaGrnwood19998 points2y ago
What really gets on my nerves is that now we have customers who come in and try to order AT THE BAR!!! Like, can't you see I'm making drinks?! I don't have time to take your order! There are registers over there?! Where have you ever gone to a store and they DON'T take your order AT THE REGISTER?! It's extremely annoying for me
He11oboyo3 points2y ago
Its almost like they've never been into a fast food place and ordered in front of the register. Please, ma'am, do not yell your drink at me over the espresso machines, I am not your butler.
student10247 [OP]2 points2y ago
The Venn diagram of older adults who go to sbux on a regular basis and older adults who are entitled as hell is a circle
They know what a register is for. They just don’t care and they know we’re literally forced to behave like “the customer is always right”
jadbwr5 points2y ago
i dont know if anyone said this but when they drive past the speaker box when they clearly haven’t ordered and pull up to the window saying they never ordered like okayyyy???? then why tf did you drive forward????
sweet-seat3 points2y ago
and then get mad you won’t take their order at the window 🥴 it is no ones fault but your own that you sat at the order box, ignored us trying to take your order, proceeded to wait 10+ minutes all to be told i am not taking your multiple food and drink item order at the window. go back around.
lahbeebs4 points2y ago
The point about the water to the bar barista really triggered my fight or flight response.
pink_haired_bitch2 points2y ago
Honestly. Of all of these, that was the one that got me haha
student10247 [OP]1 points2y ago
Haha it was such a pet peeve of mine at my old store because it happened so often T_T and we were usually busy, so we all knew it was just because these lazy people didn’t want to wait in line and they didn’t want to go to any of the MULTIPLE water fountains nearby either
doggomom13133 points2y ago
When they ask for super light ice & SUPER light cream, and then they ask for more cream... and count the ice cubes in the cup....
When they ask for TWO DROPS of whole milk in their tall pike....
These instances both happened today... both old men... I was so done after that 😂
student10247 [OP]3 points2y ago
I made a venti iced drink for some woman, and normally I do half of the indicated ice on the shaker and it’s not a problem. Tell me why when I turn around (didn’t even get to place it down on the counter) she immediately goes “um did you put light ice? that’s WAY too much ice” in an offended tone..... it took all of my willpower to not say “that IS light ice. have a nice day” and walk away 🙃 but at my new store I know that shit’s not gonna fly, so instead I dumped the entire thing out just so she would have to wait longer! (it’s my safest petty move)
And THEN she tried to justify it with “I have long work days so this is my treat and I like to have it just the way I like it” like??? mf you’re already ordering a 24oz drink a few ice cubes is NOT going to make a difference
alecrue3 points2y ago
i had this customer in drive thru that waited until after i handed him two drinks and reading the stickers to tell me it was supposed to be iced. i ask the baristas to remake it but it took a while bc we had a long queue. i hand the drink out and this mfkr goes “this isn’t what i ordered.” turns out his order was right there the entire time. what happened was the order before him pulled out of line. and instead of initially telling me the drinks were wrong altogether, he’d only said it was supposed to be ice. he wasted a lot of time for us.
meloscav2 points2y ago
I’m only not upset by the asking if it’s soy one Bc I have had the drinks made with dairy before and I was in a world of pain during a concert I was performing in.
