So I’m a new bean, & when I say new I mean like NEW. I started training 2 weeks ago, with my last day on Sunday. The partners at my training store were really helpful, and I’m glad I met them! It was super fun & they were all amazing, so I’m a little sad to be leaving them because now I get to go to the actual store assigned to me.
When I checked my schedule to see the days I worked, I only saw 1 day for this week & the following. I thought, “okay... maybe they give all new hires some time off to refresh & just take in what they were taught before they start seriously working”. However, our schedule for the week after next came out... & I’m still only working 1 day which is about 5 hours for 3 straight weeks.
I’m just a little confused, because when I was at the training store I worked until closing (because I’m still in HS, so I can’t work mornings because online school) for 5 days a week. I had gotten 22 & 16 hours for my first two weeks of training, but now I only get 4-5 hours for 3 straight weeks.
I don’t think it’s appropriate to ask my manager for more hours because I’m still so new, and I don’t think I have that right yet. Plus, the store I work at is small (it’s still a corporate store). But at the same time I can’t help but be a little upset because... 4-5... really??
If that’s the case, then I feel like they could easily give another employee those hours & just not have a new hire. I do really like the job (minus hot bar because I suck there lol) but I’m just a little stuck on what I should do. I thought I would only be getting 1 day for 2 weeks, but it seems like it might be longer... & I don’t know if I’m comfortable with that.
Again, I know I have to work my way up, but it just seems a little ridiculous to only have 4-5 hours each week.
Also, the manager at the training store I worked at said if he needed coverage at his store he’d let me come. I lowkey would rather work there since I know everyone already & it’s already a familiar environment, but I remember the first time meeting him saying that he would’ve taken me, but he doesn’t have enough for another barista :(
Any tips would be really helpful! Thank you!

You were given 16 and 22 hours because those were training hours, which are different than regular coverage hours. Since the Holiday season is officially over, stores have lost a significant amount of coverage hours that they can given out, which is why everyone is getting less they were before.
Your manager is probably anticipating losing a handful of employees to school or other non-seasonal commitments which is why they’ve hired partners without seemingly having the hours to give.
You can definitely pick up shifts at other stores, including the one you trained at, to bring up your hours until store labor is increased.

Also, keep in mind that the online schedule can change. I never believe it until I see the actual printed schedule in the store.

i know my training i was working a lot more hours than i do now. i was, however, working more than one four hour shift a week. not to assume anything about how you work, but one of our new guys has been scheduled the way you are because of his low work effort, how he got along with other employees, etc etc. i think trainers have to report that kinda stuff to their manager and the manager schedules depending on that.
you could, as you said, cover shifts at a different store, or even cover at your own store. i don't think there's anything wrong with you asking the manager for more hours though.

EDIT: also, minors have different legal issues to be taken into account for scheduling. if you're a minor and there aren't a ton of other minors there, your manager might just be wary of breaking one of those laws.

it might be because of your store’s labor and how much your manager has to give out, but no matter how new you are i would definitely ask them about it!! especially if you were (which idk if you were) guaranteed more than 4-5 hours a week. Also if you’re new you’re not going to learn very quickly if you only work one day a week. Hope this helps a little bit.

I'm in the same situation, and picking up shifts has been the best solution for me so far. Some weeks some of the other younger and newer partners and I aren't scheduled at all, but usually can pick up at least one or two shifts at our store and others.
