So I recently had an argument with a customer who bought a cup from Starbucks. As she was paying her cup, she told me if I could rinse it for her because it was dusty. I said I am not allowed to do that, to which she got upset. So she told me “how am I going to drink from a dirty cup!? I just want you to rinse 🚿 my cup” to which my Shift leader said: we are not allowed to rinse any cup. And so the customer said: but it’s your cup! It’s Starbucks’ cup! It’s not even mine!. She went on and on about the damn cup, that I told her to contact the store manager and district manager and complain to them. I ended up giving her a refund, didn’t take the cup and stormed out the store. Now fellow baristas, I know normally (without the COVID situation) we can only rinse the cup with hot water but that’s about it. In this situation, am I even allowed to rinse cups that they buy??? (I did that once, but before COVID) so I really didn’t know what to do in that situation and honestly did not want to get in trouble for it. What’s the protocol when it comes to our own Starbucks cups!? I need answers!!

I think you can rinse it if you’re going to use it as a “personal cup” (is that even a thing anymore with Covid? Haven’t been a barista in a while) but if they’re just buying it they have to wash it at home. Or not buy it. They have that option too.

Yeah no, for right now we cannot make drinks in personal cups. We just recently started being able to bring our own cups to drink from on breaks

we just cant take the cups behind the bar, who knows how contaminated it is from being touched on that shelf. she could literally just wash it at home its not that serious. its not like you can serve the drink in the cup anymore anyways, so her drink would still come in our regular disposables.

I’m kinda tired of dealing with their shit and not being able to understand
Anxious_Database2 points2y ago
Yeah she could just slide the drink in the disposable into the cup, problem solved

I would have offered her a venti cup of hot water so that she can rinse it out herself and that’s literally the only extra effort I would have put in to that situation.

She did get a cup of water for her to wash ti, but was still upset about it so...

Welp, you tried lol

This is why I haven't yet bought a reusable cup...I would forget to wash it out. I'll probably buy one post covid lock down as I tend to mobile order before I leave the house as it's like a 5 minute walk away. Clean your shit before you hand it to people.

Who knows who touched the cup before her.

In general you shouldnt be touching what the customers give you just cuz covid... but if its really a huge deal for her just do it and treat it like you just touched money or whatever, eg supposed to wash your hands. Just dont touch anything with the cup, only hot water.
