Advice? (self.starbucksbaristas)

Anytime I ask off, my manager cuts my hours in half (or by more than half). I have a full availability and have worked at my store for several years. I have only asked off three times in the time I’ve worked there, and only called off a time or two, even during COVID. A few months ago, I had to call off due to a death in the family and they cut two of my shifts. Again, I asked off for a few days because of health issues I need to get checked out, and they cut three of my shifts. Is this allowed? I don’t feel like I should have to tell them details about why I’m asking off; I’m not a child.

I’m confused. When you say they’re cutting hours, do you mean they cut the number of hours they’re scheduling you per week in later schedules? Or are you calling out and then they consider you called out for more than one shift...?

They’re cutting my hours in later schedules and they don’t get added back. It’s not a one or two week “punishment”, I just don’t get scheduled for a decent amount of hours after that.

Just give away your shift that day? Maybe that would work?

I did that the first time (death in the family), however, they still drastically cut my hours on the schedule published after the incident because I seemed “comfortable” working a minimal number of hours that ONE week.

When you say you asking off, do you mean like in advance through the app or like after the schedule has been posted?

In advance through the app. More than a month’s notice.

Did this happen last month or is for the month of January? I know this year the managers were given ~100 hours less labor for January to mediate for the business during Christmas because it’s our slowest time.

This has happened over the last several months. Additionally, (and I don’t know if it makes any difference truthfully), there’s only three people at the store with seniority over me.

I’d just keep asking her for more hours. Also, if you really want more hours and aren’t getting scheduled, just ask around at others stores and such. There are usually people who want their shifts covered. Ask local store to see if you can put your number up in the back and take initiative in volunteering for coverage.
