Does anyone else hate the question “well what do YOU recommend?” (self.starbucksbaristas)

We officially ran out of pumpkin fo the season, and someone tried to order an iced chai with pumpkin. When I informed her we don’t have pumpkin she asked what my favorite foam was.....I don’t drink anything with foam. Very rarely. And kept asking what syrups I like. I literally just drink iced americanos these days or the black iced tea unsweetened. Like 😭 it takes me so off guard because I then have to think of any and every drink combo possible in preparation for the 850000 questions i’m about to get idk

Dude I hate that question. I know that our tastes aren’t similar at all so I’m like you’re gonna hate what I recommend. I usually just offer them what’s popular. Most of all I hate “surprise me”. I’m about to surprise the hell outta you with a water

Oh I love when they say surprise me. Then I ask them to make sure "are you sure you're ok with whatever I pick?" And they usually say yes. They I try to come up with a weird concoction, but someone else, usually a shift, says no that's mean and gives them some plain as mocha. They never let me have fun.

Yo upsell that shit! Iced chai with 1-2 espresso shots & vanilla syrup! Still easy (just dumping stuff quickly in a cup, no waiting besides shots pulling) but awesome. And costs more $$$ for the customer lol. If cold bar is slow, add vsc cf.

If I ever got a surprise me I’d immediately go to the “secret smoothie” strawberry purée, little bit of lemonade, cream base, ice, 6 scoops of strawberry infusions, 3 of berry, strawberry refresher to the line, blend, whipped cream and strawberry purée at the base.
Charge as a strawberry lemonade and make the hell drink yourself. It’s the shit. Better than anything on the menu.

This morning a woman asked me to give her my favorite hot drink. I don't like hot drinks. Literally the only hot drink I ever have very occasionally is a hot chocolate. She was on the phone the entire transaction so I couldn't really ask her about her preferences. I just gave her a caramel brûlée latte because it felt like the most neutral and common hot drink.

Me too, if I can’t pass them off to a partner who likes recommending drinks then I just say I drink black coffee and water (the truth). If pressed then a passion tea lemonade for cold or caramel apple spice hot but I tell them they don’t have caffeine and they don’t like that either.... ugh I hate it just give in and make them a tiktok drink you know they want the same thing as everyone else.

LMAOOO i’m the DTO barista who isn’t fun and you’re literally everyone else 😂 had a man ask me to read off our entire pastry list bc we were out of blueberry muffins and asked what i would recommend and i was just like, “idk i had a lemon loaf on my 10 and it was pretty good” and EVERYONE was like “no!!! red velvet loaf!! RED VELVET LOAF TELL HIM ABOUT THAT!!!”

When they ask me that question, I like to ask about their favorite flavors. Are they a chocolate person? vanilla person? Meaning do they like chocolate or vanilla. Do they like nuts flavoring? This way I can try to ring up and/make something their taste buds will enjoy.

I’m known at my store as the evil shift who, when a customer asks for a SURPRISE ME drink, will make them a matcha lemonade or a plain steamed apple juice. If I’m feeling a little bit more irritated by the day I’ll give them a pump of every syrup we have on the bar in a cup with espresso ( decaf or blonde if they want caffeine ) and yes I mean EVERY syrup. The most disgusting part is that I have never heard a complaint about the abomination. 🤢

i usually just pick whatever the new seasonal offerings are. i usually can't drink them bc they all have dairy, but the customers don't know that.
