Americano Meltdown (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by smellman4
TL;DR I got yelled at for double cupping an americano.

OKAY, so I've only been working at starbucks since october of last year, so I'm still very new and learning a lot of things every day.

The other day I got yelled at by my shift supervisor for double cupping an americano. Like, shesignificantly raised her voice/yelled and was sarcastic and belittling about it. This is nothing new for her, she does something like that every day, but it was one of the more extreme moments she's had. It nearly made me cry tbh.

She went on and on about standards and not wasting inventory, but I was very frustrated and confused because I was taught that anything with BOILING WATER in it needs to have an extra layer of protection, therefore two cups as well as a sleeve. Am I the only person who does that? I'm pretty much brand new to the job and got humiliated in front of other supervisors and baristas for something that could have been fixed in a constructive way.

So yeah, basically I'm just trying to figure out if I actually did anything deserving of being yelled at.

Her yelling at you is not ok, and is abusive in the workplace. You need to talk to your SM about it, and the other shifts and partners watching should also have talked to your SM. Yelling is NEVER ok in the any circumstances. If no one will do anything about it talk to your DM. Escalate.

I'm sorry this just makes me so mad. I learned that a shift that got fired for something unrelated would yell and insult a coworker when no one else was around (two person plays on Saturday) and he didn't say anything because he was an immigrant and was afraid to speak because he thought he'd get fired. Abuse and bullying is never ok.

She also bullied me, never yelling but telling me things like "this is why no one likes you, you talk too much" and other ways to insult me that I never spoke out about because I felt like I deserved it. I did the bullying training and for the discussion part my manager asked me if I'd ever been bullied at work. I finally admitted it and my manager cried because she felt like she'd failed me because I didn't come forward. We had a big meeting where my boss made sure to let us know what kind of behavior was not acceptable and that we should come to her if we were unsure if someone was bullying. I hope you can find similar support from your SM, but if you can't please message me.

i mean, i don’t see why it’s THAT big of a deal, but it’s not standard. you’re supposed to put sleeves on ventis, anything with hot water in it, and coffee. i only double cup if the customer asks.

I worked at a Tarbucks in the past for a year and a half and Starbucks currently almost hitting my first year and I was told to double cup americanos, hot teas, HCM during both of my trainings.
So no, I don’t think you did anything wrong and the way she handled that was unacceptable.

Always double cup Americanos and hot teas. Always. I teach my beans this on like, day one. Every one should be doing this, it's the same as a stopper in every hot coffee. I'm pretty sure it's standard, and if it isn't, it should be.

I’m under the same understanding you are. I was told by my trainer and SM to double cup anything that is made with hot water (I.e americano, brewed tea) but not chai lattes for some reason

I think it’s purely because of the milk taking down The temp of the chai

So yes and no; technically it is now the standard to not double cup **BUT** in the interest of customer safety and because it USED to be the standard, but for myself and my store, we always train to use them because it’s a dumb change.

And even so, that is ABSOLUTELY no reason for your shift to yell at you. The other posters were right; you should 100% take this information to your manager. I’m so sorry you had to experience that.

I always double cup americanos and hot teas? Smh she’s trippin out
dopecanigetafrosty 6 points 2y ago
literally my trainer TAUGHT us to douple cup shit. she must’ve been having a bad day
drinkliquidclocks 6 points 2y ago
Double cupping is never necessary unless the customer asks, but come on, your shift shouldn't have responded that way

I'm sure the one cup will completely ruin the inventory and infrastructure of starbucks... Lol. I hate that shit.

I was taught to double cup all americanos at my first store.

We always double cup an americano 🤷‍♀️

i always double cup the americanos and teas. but straight up no one deserves to be yelled at. say something to them about it and how you don’t appreciate and if it doesn’t work out tell your SM. and don’t be scared cause it’s never okay and it’s never okay to be yelled at for making a mistake. hope it gets better 💚💚💚💚

We always double cup americanos and hot teas at my store. If a decision has been made to get rid of that, then it was made purely to cut costs and save the shareholders a few more cents than caring about the safety of the customers. Americanos and fresh hot coffee is HOT even through a sleeve.
