just wanted to ask some baristas their experience with this sort of situation!(self.starbucksbaristas)

People at my store are constantly “kicked off” the peak shift and put back on. my coworkers say it’s fairly common. Is this like a thing most stores do? Thanks!

Wdym by kicked off peak shift? Like kicked off bar or the floor because they can’t keep up? Or no longer scheduled during peak hours?
zoeskyel1 [OP]2 points2y ago
like taken off that part of the block schedule, not allowed to pick up shifts during peak block.

Is it because they can’t handle the flow? Like they’re not productive enough to ensure that peak is smooth
zoeskyel1 [OP]1 points2y ago
mostly bc they aren’t fast enough, which can totally disrupt the flow.
gabbysafari3 points2y ago
I haven’t heard of this being done before 😳 this definitely doesn’t happen at my store & seems sketchy. Are they being kicked because they “don’t have what it takes” to work during peak? If so, that seems detrimental to those being kicked. How are partners supposed to get better at working under pressure if they never get a chance to practice?!
zoeskyel1 [OP]3 points2y ago
yeah, i was taken off peak because i wasn’t fast enough, but did everything correctly.... it was funky but atleast now i can sleep in. Apparently people used to have to audition for the “peak team”.
gabbysafari3 points2y ago
audition?!?! I get putting certain partners in certain positions during peak based on skill/experience level but that seems way out of hand. Is there ever like drama or gossip about being on/off peak? I’d imagine this could easily lead to a toxic working environment and bad relationships between baristas 😬 I’d probs bring this up to your dm if they don’t already know
zoeskyel1 [OP]2 points2y ago
there isn’t gossip to my knowledge, if anything is ever said about people who’ve been kicked off it’s “oh yeah they were getting overwhelmed too easily” or “they just weren’t moving fast enough” people at my store aren’t toxic. we are like in the top 5 on window numbers during peak avg like 33-43 during peak. the DM gets mad at the sm if the window times average too high during peak.

Part of what the manager has to consider when scheduling is how the team works with each other. If there too many people who are slow/weak on bar, the drive times will suffer, and the people who are fast and efficient on bar will be burdened by having to be in that position every single day to make up for slow people. It’s a little extreme to not let certain people pick up shifts during certain times, but it is up to the manager’s discretion who can and can’t trade shifts.

at my store people are usually in the same spot everyday, we have people who do bar, people who dto, and people who window/CS. they rarely move people to different spots. do they do this at your store?
jackie9201 points2y ago
Nope. I move people at least once every shift and try to consider where I had them the last time I placed them. However during peak, it’s always best to keep people where they’re strongest, wherever that is. The only person I put in the same place most of the time is myself.
zoeskyel1 [OP]1 points2y ago
ya def the strongest people should be on peak. i’m just trying to see if this typical since I’ll probably transfer stores eventually.

AFAIK most stores in the US are still following block scheduling to reduce the amount of cross- contamination (although I’m not really convinced this works).
The rule is, you work one or the other. If you are moving from one to another (or going to another store to help out like I did for holidays) you have to have a 48 break before and after the switch. So, say I am normally scheduled morning block but they have a staffing issue on evening block. I could work Monday on A Block, would have to take Tuesday and Wednesday off and then could work Thursday, Friday and Saturday on B Block. I would need another two days off in a row before I could go back to mornings.
It’s a huge pain in the ass, frankly, and like I said, I don’t really know if it actually helps reduce Covid spread, but that’s the rule from what I’ve been told.
ETA: whatever block you’re assigned to means you can’t pick up shifts on other blocks or other stores without going through that 48 “isolation”.
zoeskyel1 [OP]2 points2y ago
we’re allowed to pick up shifts from pretty much any block, without the 48 hour period. there’s just like 5-6 partners in my store who aren’t allowed to pick up morning shifts (cuz that’s when we have our peak, and idk if it varies from store to store)
ProudCartographer71 points2y ago
I was going to ask what they meant by “kicked off” as well,
zoeskyel1 [OP]1 points2y ago
my coworkers act like it’s a super common thing, so i was wondering if it’s like fairly universal throughout stsrbucks, or just my store kinda thing.
zoeskyel1 [OP]1 points2y ago
not scheduled for peak shifts anymore, and not allowed to pick up shifts during peak shift.
