Beverage routine (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by cdog141
Do starbucks still use this shite? I worked there about 10 years ago in the UK. Everybody had a style or technique on bar, some better than others of course. When it got busy you knew who to put on bar to bang those drinks out. Generally, quality wasn't sacrificed for speed as we had a good ethic in the stores I worked in. I did genuinely enjoy working for starbucks.

Shortly before I left the cretinous beverage routine came about in the UK, and it was crap. I understand the theory behind it was to ensure a steadier flow of drinks, but in my experience all it did was slow us experienced baristas down. Significantly.

Bar slowed to a snails pace, especially if people were customising orders. It often took an extra person to then catch up and prep meaning cafe got trashed. Many of us couldn't get used to it, and just did it our own way when things got busy. But I remember the area manager coming in and timing us making drinks, and we were routinely told off for not sticking to beverage routine despite it slowing things down.

Just wondered if it stuck around and became the norm?

beverage routine? you mean sequencing drinks?

i’m curious as to how this slowed you down. i was a barista trained on sequencing from the beginning and it definitely makes things faster. there’s never a time you’re standing still with the beverage routine.

The beverage routine is actually really helpful once you get good at it. But like everything else, it’s a skill.

It took me a year before I could successfully sequence drinks and be more efficient. It is definitely a work I’m progress but since I’ve been able to incorporate it I’ve become much faster on bar. Of course there’s still issues - like trying to sequence frappucinos in, or HCM or something, but in general once I nailed it I became a much stronger partner.

i was trained to sequence but i never have, and my manger has been commenting that im strong on bar so it cant be that bad. i sequence in my own way basically bc if i think about the training it just makes me slower since i panic

edit: i will say i wish i knew of a better way to bang out cold bar drinks. i covered in a drive thru store this week and i realized that i take a while bc i want to actually make good iced teas and refreshers instead of batching them or not using the shaker like some other partners do

if you want, you can measure out your drinks in the shaker and then memorize where they measure in the cup. I did this so that I can pre mix refreshers in their cups with ice and then quickly shake them later when there is like 7 shaken drinks on cold bar. Hopefully that made sense lol

I’m a US partner and we have a sequence routine. I was trained to follow that, but it literally just doesn’t work. I try to make it work but it definitely doesn’t, if anything it just stresses me out more lol
