I love my job, but I don't think it loves me. (self.starbucksbaristas)

I've been a partner for about 3 months now. All my prior jobs have been at small coffee shops, where I don't have to rushrushrush. Consequently, well, I'm really bad at rushrushrushing. No matter where I'm placed, whether it be on bar or warming, I'm hurting our drive thru times. I struggle with severe anxiety, so I can't do DTO for more than 10 minutes. The only place I'm okay at is window, and I'm getting really aggravated with myself. I try working faster, but I feel like I'm butchering the quality of my drinks when I do, and I'm scared of dropping/breaking food if I rush on warming much more. Do you all have any advice?

Be kind to yourself. Things like efficiency take time to build up. You are okay. Remember being frustrated with yourself isn’t going to help. If you can, get into a groove with DTO when you’re both DTO & DTR. I personally will greet the customers at the window, take their payment, and while I’m waiting for their drinks to be finished, I will take the order of the person at the screen. Or, after passing out their drinks, I will take the next order. It takes time to find a groove that works for you. But you’ll get there :)

Best advice I’ve ever gotten (from this Reddit actually) was that at the end of the day, it’s just coffee. No matter what happens, it’s literally food/drinks.

Take deep breaths. Give your grace. Seriously it helps. It sounds dumb and obviously but just telling yourself it’s okay, youre okay, goes a long way.

On bar, best thing to remember is sequencing. Once you get that down, it’s better from there. If you, try practicing when it’s slower. Say your on bar and have no drinks and tasks are done, try making 3 short lattes. Just sequencing them. Every bit helps.

Also, mistakes will be made. You’re human. You will drop food, spill a drink, make something wrong, ect. Recognize that’s part of the job. Today, one of ourbest bar partner (been a partner for YEARS, is a barista trainer, super fast, ect) dropped a box of coconut milk and at least half of it went on the floor. Last week, one of my shifts somehow left a crumb or something in the oven and it started burning and smelt god awful. My ASM, on his first day at my store, spilt a full container of mocha EVERYWHERE. Shit happens.

If you can, joking about it has helped me. I’m a MESS on bar and have spacial awareness issues. I used to be mortified about it and constantly apologizing. Now I own it. I warn new partners that I will bump into them, and if I’m in the way to just tell me to move. I make a mess, then when I have the time just clean it. It’s helped so much just admitting my faults.

You’ve got this!

Don’t worry! Do what you can, also for the part where you say you’re scared of spilling/dropping your food it happens all the time lol! I remember I accidentally spilled coffee into the ice containers and we had to dump all the ice out and clean it out LOL, and I dropped a breakfast sandwich this morning. You’ll be okay!
