Starbucks started with two sizes: short and tall. Then as they expanded their menu, they added “grande”, which was supposed to be the large size. Then they expanded again and added “venti” for the 20 oz drinks since venti means 20. And then they expanded again and gave us “trenta” for our 30 oz drinks since trenta means 30.

Basically, they didn’t realize what they would become when they started and by the time they did it was too ingrained in the culture of Starbucks to change the names.

I wish theyd do just a reboot.

Do you give out ventis or grandes whenever people say large? This is the first time anyone has ever meant grande. Every other time the customer meant venti for me.

Yeah I always assume they mean venti if they say large

It would be a sin to name a 16oz beverage a “medium” when a standard cup of coffee is 8oz (“extra small”), just imo. It’s too McDonald’s. Starbucks does not need to vanity size its beverage size names. It’s already become a den of bloated sugar and calories, there should at least be some kind of indication that it’s not normal

(A trenta is literally just one ounce off a quart. Those really skinny milk jugs in the grocery store-those are quarts. An entire quart of liquid. There’s a reason why we limit it to coffee and tea. People get venti pink drinks with heavy cream and they’d do trenta if we let them!)

Also small-medium-large has been a standard way humans have organized fast food sizes for eons. If you went to French Burger King and the sizes were petit medium? and grand? you would know what is what. If we named our cups red/blue/yellow you would know red is small and yellow is large. People not spending the two minutes to logic out the organization of a menu or read it when they don’t go somewhere frequently isn’t really an issue I’m pressed about. If they get caught up on the literal translation of the word grande, that’s on them. They also have the option to say “medium”. We are able to figure that one out too
