They ask so much of us and still, they want more(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by julieCivil
Closed all weekend which means body stiff as hell, no social life of course, fall into bed and then caffeinate to get through the shift, limp out to my car only going home or to work.
Opening all week which means no sleep for fear of missing alarm, exhaustion too heavy to shift, headache from drinking too much espresso, not enough water, no real food intake other than SBux choices, basically living on adrenaline and caffeine.
Starbucks asks us to give everything we've got when we are working, particularly with that dreaded customer connection nonsense, keep moving, never-ending tasks and customers, managing breaks and partners and everyone else's mental health, putting away the order, making the order, the pulls, pulling cold brew, making kegs, ad nauseum AND IT NEVER ENDS AND IT IS NEVER GOOD ENOUGH.
Does anybody else feel this? I AM TIRED, SIREN, SO TIRED.
moon-brat62 points2y ago
I’m a manager and yes I feel this 100000%. So sick of hearing about customer connection. Ever think if we aren’t feeling our best we cannot give people our best? I’ve been trying to explain that to my district manager. I cannot preform if I’m not well mentally and they just can’t seem to understand that. 50+ hours a week isn’t enough. They want you to be a robot.
julieCivil [OP]26 points2y ago
I do not know how you do it. Honestly, can an SM have any life at all outside of starbucks? I just don't see how.
moon-brat20 points2y ago
I don’t know either 😂 and absolutely not there is no life but Starbucks. I didn’t realize I sold my soul for a few extra dollars 🙄
julieCivil [OP]8 points2y ago
I am so sorry.
ih8yogurt1 points2y ago
A good sm doesn’t have a life outside of Starbucks. I know a few sms who work the minimum 40 hours
watszittooyah29 points2y ago
I mean shouldn’t we be more focused on safety and health with covid with the damn cc score?
NothingToSeeFolks26 points2y ago
“Don’t ask customers to put on a mask because they don’t like it and our cc score dropped” FUCK. THAT. SHIT. Our safety is more important than a goddamn bullshit customer connection score.
TylerJ71610 points2y ago
That will drop the score?? Is that why my DM just shot me down when I brought up masks in our last virtual meeting?? His excuse was that Starbucks doesn't see customers in drive through as a standard so my comment was essentially dismissed. So fucked up.
NothingToSeeFolks3 points2y ago
Angry customers give us bad scores, and customers that don’t want to wear masks and are asked to are angry

Now that we have block scheduling I was assigned to be a "night person." I'm enjoying this in that I'm able to sleep a normal schedule and that I don't go to work not having eaten anything like I used to when I worked mornings. I would get a ten, right?--because of course you're not scheduled six hours so that you don't have to get a lunch (it's six hours in my state, but whatever). I once wanted to use the restroom and eat a blueberry oatmeal during my ten. I didn't make the oatmeal myself so by the time I'd gotten it and eaten just a few bites of it and given up trying to eat something for breakfast and gotten back on the floor, 22 minutes had passed. So my shift supervisor fussed at me. God forbid I get to take in sustenance at 9 a.m. after waking up at 3:30 a.m. I do not miss having to choose between breakfast and holding my coffee pee for hours more. (For those who were wondering, I would always choose breakfast. I did start getting bladder infections too, but that's partly due to a personal proneness to them. Now I just take a stronger medication for that.) Another time recently I worked a morning and didn't eat breakfast first. It was such a horrible day with such terrible short-staffing and bad management and it was a Sunday during holiday and I was so overworked I started crying on the floor, much to my surprise.

You have to leave.

Making my plans, flap!
lily-amber6 points2y ago
I fee this. I love when we’re short staffed because employees get so burned out they call in (understandably) and we get pressured to keep drive times down. I am almost always on bar (to avoid small talk with customers if I can help it haha) and i’ll be taking care of drive, cafe, and our overflowing mobiles, still pressured to be faster. I’d be more than happy to try even harder if I were paid a livable wage and treated like a person by customers.
julieCivil [OP]2 points2y ago
Yes, it is some weird theatre where the customers gawk at us and comment on how they are making beverages.
jadbwr5 points2y ago
the nausea i feel from all the caffeine and fake enthusiasm, pls i’m just so tired
julieCivil [OP]2 points2y ago
Nausea. Yes. I didn’t even recognize my own voice today when I told a customer to “have a nice day”. Like who was that? lol
vador44664 points2y ago
All the time
julieCivil [OP]4 points2y ago
I would commiserate if making customer connections hadn’t stolen my life out of me. 🥰
ih8yogurt3 points2y ago
I’m the only person who likes making customer connections. I love being solo dto/Dtr because then my happy voice is the only thing they hear. It’s not even a customer service voice. My customer service voice only comes out when I’m pissed off at a Karen who literally shushes me or something like that. However If Im only on dtr then I hate it because I run out of things to talk about. And I feel left out of all the jokes because I don’t have a headset on
FoxyOnTheRun_3 points2y ago
I’m there dude. I’m there.
julieCivil [OP]2 points2y ago
I am so, so sorry. Hugs
SighJayAtWork3 points2y ago
Absolutely.
julieCivil [OP]3 points2y ago
Genuinely sorry to hear that, compadre
mamalogic2 points2y ago
At least you don’t have to smile so wide given the mask wearing requirement. I see how burdened folks are as I swing by on my way to work. Reminds me to keep supporting folks with consistent good tips and being equally nice in return. Hard to keep my appreciation level up consistently as I am in a mad rush to make it to work and usually throw in a buck, grab my beverage, say a quick thank you and make my dash.
Butterflybo0ty2 points2y ago
Doesn’t help with ur own coworkers r dicks, cause they feel the same but take it out on others smh
julieCivil [OP]2 points2y ago
I’m sorry, dude. I work wirh really nice partners but I’ve had that happen a time or two. Hugs
Loose-Thoughts2 points2y ago
HONESTLY! My SM asked me to work 13 days straight, morning shifts (4:30AM-6:30AM-1PM), because we had people out over the COVID coach and I’m “the best at customer connection.” I wish I didn’t have the memory to remember names and drinks! I wish our focus wasn’t based on a score!
julieCivil [OP]2 points2y ago
It almost is not worth it to be reliable and good at your job at Starbucks, honestly.
Js_On_My_Yeet2 points2y ago
Corporate greed is honestly making baristas want to quit. They expect so much out of us and being able to have great customer service, but don't even think about their own partner's needs. We are expendable to them. Their benefits don't outweigh the pay and ridicule we have to take from customers. So to all the customers out there: yes, Starbucks hates its employees.
julieCivil [OP]1 points2y ago
Exactly right. Hell in the trenches for what?? Not a living wage and don’t say health insurance when my entire paycheck goes to that!
killerwhaletank2 points2y ago
I don't just feel this, but I feel it on a spiritual level.
julieCivil [OP]2 points2y ago
Our spirit wants sleep
the1noir-20 points2y ago
Not you complaining about your literal job.
proletarithot1 points2y ago
You do know that just because they pay someone to work that doesn’t mean the workload is fair, ethical, or properly compensated... silencing “complaints” is a poorly disguised attempt to devalue workers and their labor.
If no one every brought up injustices in the workplace then we’d never have a minimum wage, a 5 day work week, overtime, etc.
julieCivil [OP]1 points2y ago
Yeah. Dat me complaining about my literal job where I make $14/hr to kill my self.
