green bean problems (self.starbucksbaristas)

i’ve only been a partner for a little over a month (a week of that spent in isolation due to another partner’s positive test.) i’m not great on bar just yet—still a little slow—so i spend a lot of time DTR/DTO and POS. there’s a woman who comes into the cafe around the same time every single day, and she always shows me her phone with the same order “blonde pour over with an extra shot of caffeine, and make sure it’s FRESH.” i’m great with people, but this woman constantly has a bad attitude. it took everything in me not to say “a pour over is always fresh because it’s quite literally poured over the grounds and into your cup, and there’s no such thing as an extra shot of caffeine.” i really like our kind regulars, but i guess i’m not used to the mean ones yet.

me: I'm confused about how a pour over wouldn't be fresh? Like..you have to make it in front of her

Oh..yep..you noticed that too.

i genuinely didn’t know how to react. she was so emphatic that it needed to be fresh. i don’t know what a stale pour over is?

You probably held it together better than I would have. The one thing that gets me in trouble is that I can't with things like this. I just let them know "Ma'am, we make it fresh when you order it." and walk away.

I have to do that when people order refreshers and insist they don't want lemonade, because they think they all come with lemonade. Or insist they don't want whipped cream on their caramel macchiato.

If we’re being honest, so far I’ve seen green beans react better in these situations than older partners—probably because older partners are so over it and green beans are afraid to mess up. Best advice is to keep your cool, kindly inform the customers without flat out correcting them, and always tell them to have a nice day. I know it’s easier said than done, but try not to let these people get under your skin. Keep going I’m sure you’re doing great🤗

you’re very kind. had a whole conversation over DTO with a woman about how mocha actually /isn’t/ coffee while the customer insisted that it was. a few other partners who’ve been around much longer than me said i handled it better than they might have — can definitely say that it’s because i don’t want to mess up 😭

I'm a very fresh green bean (only worked for a week) and just found out someone at my store also has covid. In a way I'm glad, because I work at a campus licenced store and was going to start next Tuesday with not even 2 weeks of training 😅😭 I've already had attitude from people like this and I haven't even started officially lol
