asking for advice while also ranting (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hey fellow baristas! I need some advice. A family member of mine passed away. I spent all day finding people to cover my shifts so I could go be with my family. I told my boss I would be gone for the 2 weeks i was scheduled (that i found coverage for myself) and then quarantine during the next schedule (which i requested time off for). She basically told me that taking all this time off is a burden on my fellow partners for scheduling and that I should reconsider. Ive been thinking about leaving for a while. My mental health has been suffering, i have more than one family member who is having severe health issues and overall I am not sure how much more I can take. My boss wants to sit down and talk tomorrow about my time off and i'm thinking about just putting my two weeks in. Tomorrow is my last shift before my time off and I was wondering if I can put my two weeks in and just not come back? I have all of my shifts for the next two weeks covered anyway. Do I have to wait until I get back and then work the two weeks? I don't know how it works! Thank you in advance to anyone who read all this and can help me!

First off, I’m so sorry to hear about your family member’s passing. I’m sending you good vibes during this tough time.

Secondly, your manager is being manipulative and lacks the compassion of basic human decency if she’s telling you that taking time off is a burden after you had a death in the family and you have done all that work to get your shifts covered. It’s her job to figure out the schedule, not try and guilt trip you into making her life easier. In fact if you are in the US, and depending how closely related you are to your late family member, you may even be entitled to bereavement pay (it’s like a day or two and more if you travel, maybe?). But I would definitely look into it via Google or calling PCC.

Finally, the two weeks thing is a courtesy to your employer so that they can have some time to replace you/not screw up their schedule, which you wouldn’t since you got your shift covered. It’s not a requirement to quitting. You could absolutely tell your manager that you are taking the time off after finding yourself coverage and that you won’t be coming back afterward. If you think that that would be the best thing for you, go for it. Take care of yourself, friend. You and your mental and physical well-being are more important than coffee will ever be.

I quit today and I feel great. I really appreciate your advice, I probably would have let the guilt stop me without your comment. Thank you!

I am so glad to hear that! Good for you! And I wish you the absolute best, friend!

I am so glad you quit. And seriously, the only real reason to give notice at a job that treats you like crap is if you need the reference.

if you wanna be petty about it you can put in your two weeks and then turn around and say you're not staying for your two weeks and would like to be paid out for your last check asap 🤷🏽‍♀️
