Store Transferring Advice? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Psychedelic_Doughnut
So I transferred from a store a couple states away to my current store now. It was cool, easy transition, no big deal. My current store that I’m at is a little downtrodden and a bit out of shape, but I’m happy with it. But I want to grow into being a shift supervisor, and the ASM that is helping develop me is departing to a brand new store to be their manager - a store that is in need of shift supervisors and baristas to get it fully staffed up.

My current SM is nice, and generally great, but I’ve had a lot of feedback from people saying that she doesn’t really have real drive to help develop people and doesn’t give feedback. So I guess my question is, how do I tell her I want to transfer for the sole purpose of growing and moving up in the company without sounding like I think this store won’t let me do that?

You could say something like you see more opportunities for growth in the new store since they’re starting from the ground up. Maybe say it’s closer to where you live or the location is more convenient (if it’s true or if you won’t get caught in the lie). I definitely wouldn’t mention the ASM being a reason at all unless they specifically invited you over

Yeah, that’s actually a great idea. That’s actually the main reason I want to move over, I just don’t wanna say things the wrong way and ruin my chances ya know? I have been wanting to grow for a while, but I just didn’t really see any room for growth here at my store.

Most districts actually want you to transfer to be promoted to shift anyway so it may be a perfect opportunity for your ASM to bring you along for training!

That’s what I was hoping, but I am not sure, since my store is kind of understaffed and my shift in particular (I’m a closer). I just really want to grow, I love my job but I feel like I could be doing more than just doing what I’ve always done for the past two years, ya know?
