I work at a pretty busy corporate store, I am on window a few times a week and connections are really important to us so I always try to make suggestions and be extra nice. I was recently shopping and noticed someone staring at me in the store. I was shopping with my grandmother so I was concerned for her safety as well. He enters the same aisle as me staring me down and pushes his cart in front of mine and proceeds to ask me if I work at starbucks to which I say, yes, and he said I really liked the drink you made me. I was like *awkwardly* "ok I don't remember it but I'm glad!" And he asks me for my name so he can write me a good review. I was sort of flattered... until I noticed him following me around the store and continuously making eye contact and trying to start conversation. I felt unsafe and made sure to be extra vigilant. Should I alert my manager to this so that they can make sure we are all on the same page about privacy? Or am I overreacting?

Not overreacting in the slightest. This guy sounds like a creep—get your SM involved pronto. Carry pepper spray in your bag.

Remember, you aren't required to be as nice off the clock as you are at work. You can get a bit rude. If your manager tells you otherwise, they are wrong. You agreed in the handbook not to reflect poorly upon the company (that's how they fire tik tok baristas) but when you are out of uniform they have less power.

Always always ALWAYS keep yourself safe. Sirens eat men alive. Honor her with your self defense 🧜‍♀️💪

Yes carry pepper spray because that happened to one of my partners the guy would stay in the store for long hours when she would work

This is why I don’t wear my name tag when my SM isn’t there.

Tell your SM. And make sure your fellow partners know to never ever give out your schedule or anyone else’s.

If a customer EVER makes you feel uncomfortable on or off the clock, contact your manager and report it ASAP.

I had a customer who would regularly make inappropriate comments to me (the words he used weren’t exactly inappropriate, but the WAY he said them was) over time it progressively got worse but I tried to ignore it (I was still new at the time and didn’t want to cause a stir).

A few months into working for Starbucks I took 2 weeks off to get married. Apparently while I was gone, this creepy customer constantly came in asking where I was. When I came back to work, he came in and asked me why I was gone for so long. I told him I took time off for my wedding (not that it was any of his business) and he became visibly upset (like he was genuinely MAD that I got married) He then replied, “Oh.. your husbands name is ____ isn’t it? Didn’t he go to ____ university?” Mind you, I just recently moved to the state that I live in. There’s no possible way he knows me, my husband or anyone else in my life for that matter. The ONLY way he would’ve known those things about me would be if he stalked my social media pages.

At that point I felt super uncomfortable, ignored him and went into the back room until he left. From that point on, I started reporting every creepy interaction with him to my manager.

A few months later I was promoted to SSV and I was closing the store. My pre-closer had left for the night but she called the store shortly after. She said that her boyfriend who picks her up from work noticed a man sitting in his car watching me and another girl he’s obsessed with close the store. It was THE CREEPY GUY!

My pre-closer’s boyfriend is an officer and had his gun on him so he stayed in the parking lot until we were done closing, escorted us out to our cars and eventually the creepy guy left.

The very NEXT DAY creepy guy came in on his same creepy bullshit and I was DONE. I told him he needed to leave. Got a picture of his license plate. Called the police, my store manager and my DM letting them know that he’s banned from the store. The police tracked him down, told him he was no longer allowed to even step foot in our parking lot and if he is ever within eyeshot of our store he’d be arrested.

Come to find out this man was known to stalk and harass girls from multiple other businesses around town. He literally followed a girl from Panera to the gym and watched her workout 🤮

Moral of the story... if you feel uncomfortable, TRUST YOUR GUT!

You are not overreacting. You need to do something about this. Something similar happened at the store I work in and it makes my job very uneasy and I feel unsafe. I wouldn’t want the same for you.
