This job is going to be very communication heavy for the most part. Noise cancelling headphones may not work. You'll be required to either communicate with customers constantly or partners on the floor. Plus with all the hot liquid being passed and carried around you may be a danger to yourself or other partners.

Unfortunately it isn’t a very quiet work environment. Steaming milk, blenders, music, customers and with your fellow baristas communicating there is almost no way to make it extremely quiet. Maybe a small local cafe would work out better?
honey-green-tea2 points2y ago
just an fyi, you cannot solicit or recruit customers or your fellow partners.
iwantmysharpieback3 points2y ago
Most of these responses would only be helpful if you actually get hired. The getting hired part would be the sticky bit. If you bring up your issues in the interview it could negatively hurt your chances. If you bring them up after starting you would negatively hurt your working relationship with management. I don't envy your position, but starbucks probably won't be a comfortable environment for you no matter what.

I thought you were already CEO of your own company?
T1MM3RMAN2 points2y ago
So what are you going to do with all those people you were recruiting to the company that you're the CEO of? Did you make enough money with that and decide that they aren't important enough? They don't need support? How are you dealing with how much you hate corporations and the rich?

You would need to call PRSC and ask about a workplace accommodation as headphones are not typically allowed while working. Hope you’re able to figure out a solution!
roxman68 [OP]-9 points2y ago
But can’t they get sued because it’s a medical issue
[deleted]7 points2y ago
Starbucks has the right to decide that allowing you to wear noise cancelling headphones while at work is not a reasonable accommodation that they can make. Partners are often moving past each other in tight spaces and going through swinging doors, so if you can’t hear someone making you aware of their presence, and you run into someone holding a hot coffee without a lid on it and it spills on them, or someone gets hit with a door, your particular accommodation could potentially hinder the safety of other partners on the floor.
_Pulltab_5 points2y ago
The requirement is that they have to enter into an “interactive discussion” to determine whether or not they can find an accommodation. And it doesn’t have to be the accommodation you want, it could be something else.
But, they don’t have to violate safety issues, seniority rules, or experience an “undue hardship” in order to accommodate you and you still need to be able to do your job. Obviously, seniority wouldn’t be a factor here, and a company as large as Starbucks would have a hard time claiming “undue hardship” but I suspect the headphones would be a safety issue and would also make it extremely difficult to do your job as verbal communication is extremely important for safety and productivity reasons. That being said, we do have deaf and HOH partners so I would assume it would fall along the same lines in terms of dealing with someone who can’t hear due to needed noise cancellation.
ladycali873 points2y ago
Deaf and HOH partners have ways to communicate, would op have to show that they have a way to communicate with partners and customers while wearing the headphones?
_Pulltab_3 points2y ago
I’m not sure. I’m assuming it’s an issue of being able to be aware of surroundings to reduce the risk of injury and being able to field requests from customers and coworkers for assistance. I am just thinking: if I didn’t wear a headset or was wearing something that dampened my hearing, would I hear timers, the oven, someone asking me to grab milks, a request for syrup on the fly, someone coming up behind me saying “behind/hot”, etc.
I assume they have a work-around for deaf/HOH partners so I would assume they could accommodate something like this if it’s a bonafide sensory issue.
xjdempseyx3 points2y ago
I can’t speak to why or why not a person would take legal action. Start with reaching out to partner resources and requesting an accommodation. Simply wearing headphones on the floor without a medical accommodation would not be allowed. Good luck
roxman68 [OP]-3 points2y ago
They are noise canceling
Agartha334 points2y ago
You would still have to get a medical exemption.
T1MM3RMAN1 points2y ago
Nope
Pixelology1 points2y ago
What happened to being a CEO?
roxman68 [OP]1 points2y ago
I am still
healthypenguins1 points2y ago
As a partner who has a sensory issue, I can tell you that working in a drive-thru (especially a busy one) probably just won't work.
I have recently transferred to a cafe store, and it's a lot better. But there are times when there are going to be a lot of different noises happening at the same time. You may find managers that would find a work-around, but honestly wearing headphones would make my job more difficult if anything. That being said, Starbucks isn't for everyone. There are other job options in the world, and one of those might be better.
roxman68 [OP]-2 points2y ago
Thanks for the response. Could the manager put a sign up while I’m working asking everyone to keep the volume down. I’d be fine with that if I can’t wear headphones
StormTheParade3 points2y ago
This is not a reasonable accommodation.
Just in case you aren't trolling like your account history implies - in order to get medical accommodation you need to have an actual diagnosis from a psychologist or doctor, i believe you need to report your disability when applying, and then you need to speak with the manager.
If you are American, you need to look into the ADA and what that entails for you.
However if you allegedly had the money to start your own business, and pay people that you are allegedly trying to hire, you shouldn't need a part time job (which is what Starbucks is). Also you stated that you're trying to avoid the 9-5 but you still want to work a high-stress, fast-paced part time job?
Your post doesn't add up at all my dude. Please don't just come here to troll.
roxman68 [OP]-2 points2y ago
Excuse me. You don’t know me point blank period. Starbucks would be part time and it doesn’t seem that hard tbh. It will also give me a chance to recruit for my other job
_cockgobblin_2 points2y ago
doesn’t seem that hard? yikes this is not eh place to insult workers trying to help you

Please don't just follow someone across subreddits to attack them.
Even if someone is a troll, this still becomes a valid question for people who do actually have sensory issues, which is why the post is up. No need to be nasty.
StormTheParade1 points2y ago
I'm just looking at your post history and speaking about the job from experience. And also asking that you don't come here just to stir up drama.
How do you not have time to recruit right now? You can't recruit customers, if that's what you're looking at doing.
