Useful Spanish for baristas? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Bumblebee-k
Hey all!

I just moved to an area with a large Spanish-speaking population (mostly Latin American/ Mexican Spanish). I'm learning Spanish on duolingo but was wondering if anyone could share useful phrases for our job specifically?

I can take a basic coffee order (que talla quieres, leche o azucar, algo mas) but I really don't know how to start with anything more complicated.

Thanks!

When giving a total how would I phrase it? Like, cuatro dólares y ochenta y cuatro centavos? Does it translate to say cuatro ochenta y cuatro?
strexedoctopus 5 points 2y ago
you can say "CON" to make difference between the money and cents like $4.84 you can say "cuatro CON ochenta y cuatro" like "Okay, su total es Cuatro Con Ochenta y cuatro (4.84), but that's only if you dont want to say the whole cuatro DOLARES y ochenta y cuatro CENTAVOS, but the way you phrased it was perfectly fine!!! they will understand

Numbers for prices, giving change, asking about receipts and method of payment. Flavors like hazelnut, irish cream, and the other seasonal ones. Learn how to describe a frappuccino. (I still have no universally understand spanish word for "blended")

Most pastries will be fine by themselves, never had a Spanish speaker not know what banana bread or a croissant is. The trouble always seems to be with seasonal drinks.

Oh! And learn how to ask people to slow down/repeat themselves. I say (in spanish) "I'm sorry, again please? Please talk like I'm a baby, I'm dumb" which gets a laugh and reassurance and the order again but in smaller words.

Caliente o Frio?

Hot or cold?

Azucar? Sugar?

Con leche? With milk?

And then lots of pointing. Good luck!

So many times I wish I had a laser pointer because they like to point at the pictures on our menu boards.
