Transferring issues (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Bubblebutt217
Has anyone had issues transferring to other stores? I moved an hour from my store, so I asked my current manager and called ahead to the transferring store manager. I’m being told I need to interview again even though my current store manager has already sent over transfer papers and taken me off the schedule. Is this normal?

Not normal, someone dropped the ball, did your previous sm sign off and alert your previous dm? Then it goes back down the ladder to the new dm and new sm. If it’s the same district then this is really stupid petty.

It’s an hour across from my current store so I believe the district is different. My current DM and SM approved, so I assumed they talked with the new, but maybe not? The new store was shut down for awhile but I started this process before then. The new SM said it takes a few weeks to complete process, which saddens me since I was so excited about not having to drive 2 hours each day haha

A few weeks?! Haha why! They code your home store and it’s done. If they didn’t put you on the schedule then yeah your gonna wait a few weeks but thats garbage.

Wtf no. You don't have to interview again. Good Lord.

The new mgr can say, hey, I really don't have any hours available right now, and you could make a choice based on what sucks the least for the moment, but then they're obligated to accept a transfer in before hiring someone for hours you want there.

That’s what my current store manager said. She already sent the transfer papers and I already said I’m free whenever except for like 3 days in the afternoon. SMH I just didn’t think it was a big to do to be transferred. My manager said the same thing but said that she will respect it. I’m like ummm can I go to another store then? But this lady said she oversees all the stores in the area?

This sounds like someone you don't want to work for. But check harder about this "I oversee alllllll" claim. I've never encountered a manager dealing with more than two stores at a time bc that is freaking exhausting. If she is aware of the situation at multiple stores, though, it makes it that much less likely that a pre-trained transfer partner couldn't be of use somewhere.

Or, is it possible that something is being lost in translation, and she just wants to chat a bit first? Because this sounds like absolutely power-crazed batshit in which she is making her own life wayyy harder necessary.

Get your DM involved to connect with your new DM if you need to. A few years ago Starbucks took some major public heat about baristas traveling too far, past plenty of other more convenient stores on their way to work. They are now very dedicated to finding you a spot at a convenient location.

Maybe? Idk I’m still fairy new (started in Oct.) so I’m hoping this isn’t the reason for the hoops. I originally thought that she just wanted to meet and talk but she described the meet up and an interview to see if I fit at the store and that it’s a process that takes a few weeks. My current SM and DM are confused but I’m happy they are supporting me. My current SM said she’s going to put me on the schedule for next week until we figure this out which is such a relief since I can’t afford to not work rn

Well, it does take a few weeks in that they can usually only add you to a newly posted schedule 3 weeks out, but all that needs to happen is your current manager says, "hey, she's off my schedule as of ___. Her partner #s are ____, please xfer her starting that next day." And then your new manager pulls you as of the date specified. Usually the two managers have discussed you and your skills pretty frankly either by email or phone, so she'd know you're newish, but that's not a reason not to take someone. Valid reasons include: no available hours, if you had several write ups recently, or if your manager otherwise described you as a problem and were working on correcting behaviors. Doesn't sound like any of that's the case.

You may just want to go ahead and meet with her as a path of least resistance, and to start from a cooperative place. But if she were to say afterward that you just don't seem like a good fit, that's not valid, and your current DM should continue to back you up.
