Don’t work at a grocery store kiosk lmao(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lonerblue
idk if i count as a real barista enough to rant because I work at a grocery store kiosk and I’ll take it down if thats the case, but... at least take this as a warning to never work at a grocery store kiosk
For starters, we are not allowed to take tips because other departments complained that they don’t get tips. Grocery store managers are rude and borderline act like having a starbucks is a personal burden on them although they are never involved at all in our day to day, and one of them has a very antagonistic dynamic with our starbucks manager/lead. We also don’t get any free drinks (actually, the entire crew has been here less than a year because the old crew got fired because they thought they got shift drinks).
Also! customers fail to understand that were are not a full starbucks!! most are nice but some are so dumb!!
“well, you’re just lying, I got a blond espresso and a nitro cold brew here yesterday” ma’am you did not! we don’t have access to that technology!!
“oh last time I came in my coffee was cold, they said I could get a free one” “I’m not seeing a note, when was this?” “three months ago”
I’m a college student, looking for less than 20hrs, but the grocery store just fired a girl for buying some personal emergency supplies while clocked in (complete BS, and some manager took it upon themself to gossip and let the entire store know), so the schedule got really unbalanced. I’ve only been here a month, but I’m left alone for several hours at once, sometimes even entire shifts because people just don’t come in. Another person is probably going to quit, someone else is transferring departments, and our manager is also trying to quit. The departments either going to have to close, or someone whose been here less than five months will become the new manager. In either case...yikes, i will be dipping.
Don’t get me wrong- I like all of my fellow baristas/lead, but jeez, this grocery store is taking ten years off my life. It’s disorganized, and full of petty, catty, drama that makes it seem like I’m working on the set of a CW teen drama.

Yes you are definitely a real barista! And I totally get this post, no need to delete ❤️

i’m sorry you go through this! definitely a shitty situation. is there a corporate store you can transfer to if you ever decided you wanted to? you’d have a much easier time given you already have starbucks experience. :)
jasonsamoacookie13 points2y ago
For cooperate us kiosk workers can’t just transfer, we have to go through the whole application and hiring process like a new worker basically. We can transfer to other kiosks in the same company store though :(

Apply and go to a corporate Starbucks. I did that and I've been at my corporate store for almost 2 years. Grocery store sbux is hell because they're mismanaged. I've been there but real sbux is way better
Fit_Willingness12292 points2y ago
i totally get it!! but at least you’ll have the experience that other applicants wouldn’t have :)

Damn, u guys don't get tips? We get tips at our Safeway kiosk but they're taxed and split by the hour. You're spot on with the whole LEAVING ONE PERSON MANNING A WHOLE KIOSK AT EVERY RUSH HOUR I HATE IT
NOT TO MENTION THE AMOUNT OF TIMES I HAVE TO TELL CUSTOMERS I DON'T KNOW WHAT A DRINK TASTES LIKE BECAUSE I COULD GET FIRED FOR MAKING A DRINK FOR MYSELF

Girl I feel you. I work at a kiosk store too. I worked there, took a year and a half off to take care of my newborn bc i could afford it, and just came back a month ago. It is so frustrating sometimes. Grocery store Starbucks are frankly unfair and the company knows nothing about Starbucks. I’ve had to retrain our new baristas bc they’ve been doing so much wrong while I’ve been gone. It’s not their fault, it’s managements fault for not properly training. Customers also get mad at me for long waits bc there’s a line full of people and they scheduled one person to be there for 4 hours alone during rush hours. I was also hired back as part time bc of college, but they went against my schedule availability and are now frustrated with me for asking them to change it back. I love Starbucks and wish I could get hired at cooperate instead.

the doing stuff wrong part is so relatable- everyday I flip through the little recipe books like “ope!! been doing that one super wrong!!”

Fucking this. I am experiencing the same exact thing. Customers asking for items we don't have, ignorant store manager, terribly messy schedule, and horribly understaffed. My advice for your specific situation is to leave and/or maybe contact the grocery stores union of you're unionized already.

Please don’t feel like you aren’t apart of the starbies family, you definitely are and are very deserving of the barista title. I hope that it gets better and you get the recognition you deserve ♥️🥺

I almost thought you were talking about my grocery store kiosk...until the drinks part.
I completely understand. I'm dealing with trying to find another job before I put in my 2 weeks.
Unipanther3683 points2y ago
Sorry your location is pretty bad and unsupportive. ;-; Yes, we are absolutely real baristas. We make pretty much everything a normal Starbucks makes. Sounds like you kiosk is run poorly and your store managers have no respect for the kiosk -- sorry to hear that. I hope things turn up better for you in your next job opportunity!

I work at a grocery store starbucks too. And let me tell you K experience ALL OF THIS. The part that really irks me is the no free drinks and no tips. Like Jesus is the store that cheap? Thankfully I work more in other departments as well. But damn I would rather quit than become full starbucks Barista.

I’m at a kiosk and I don’t have the plastic dividers and I yelled at customers three times not to reach around to grab something to ask (we have a sign that said if you need something to ask us) and my kiosk has been around since June of last year And my county has been in level four for about 2 weeks now so that’s fun But in other news since working for a Starbucks kiosk I’ve been not as timid I actually have a back bone 🤣
Edit and my store is one of two stores in my area with nitro and one of three stores (that I know of) with blond espresso

Too late lmao. I did that already.

I feel this! I work at a franchise location, so even though we have access to all the equipment, we can’t take stars and points. I have to brace myself for impact every time a customer starts off their order with “okay I have some stars” or I wake up that morning with a notification from my own SB app that it’s double star day or BOGO anything. Telling customers we can’t take their points is so scary. The looks I’ve gotten...oh boy.
lonerblue [OP]7 points2y ago
Yes!! people take us not being able to do their stars as a personal attack! im just like why do you think i am emotionally invested in this in any way lmao

I work at a Proudly Serving & the inability to accept the app/gift cards KILLS me. I understand why people leave to go to the real Starbucks.
YellowSphinx2 points2y ago
I worked at a grocer Starbucks as well. don’t you have a Starbucks DM? Anytime we had an issue we would go to ours and he would tell the store management to check themselves. we couldn’t do a lot of the things a regular Starbucks could do as well. which was frustrating. but you do what you can and if they have a problem with that. Sucks for them.
