too many hours? (venti rant) (self.starbucksbaristas)

so i’m gonna start with the fact that i just turned 18 about a month ago, and i am still in high school, going back to school in person the first week of feb.

so basically, i have 35 hours next week with only one day off which is fine i guess that’s normal i have pretty open availability. however, i’m working january 27-february 4, 9 days in a row, with no day off, closing 7 out of the 9 days, and ending off the 9th day doing clean play alone when i’ve never even done one at all to begin with!

i’m really worried this is gonna interfere with me also going back to face-to-face school, rather than online school and only having two classes. my schooling is super important to me, and i definitely can’t be distracted in my last couple months.

but we’re super short staffed on closers right now and i’d love some advice on how to go about talking to my sm about this? last week i worked 8 days in a row and it almost killed me, i was so exhausted and i don’t know if i can continue doing this while also going to school for 7 hours 5 days a week.

i don’t want to quit because i genuinely enjoy working at starbucks, but i’m also scared that working that much is going to burn me out a lot quicker.

any tips on what i should do? should i try to get some shifts covered? call out? should i just try my hardest to get through all of them? i really need some help here! (also i’m sorry if this is super jumbled but i’m lowkey freaking out about it)

9 days of work without a day off? Clean play by yourself? Are you a shift supervisor? If you aren’t, that’s not legal. All of that honestly doesn’t sound legal to me. I’m not sure if it is or isn’t, but I’d contact nearly everyone in a higher position than your manager in order to get answers. That, but it’s also a minimum wage job and should be flexible for your own personal life. Focus on school, and if you have to call out sick!

hey babe!! i’m so sorry you’re scheduled like this. ur not supposed to work 7 consecutive days! if u can’t talk to ur SM, try calling either ur DM or maybe partner resources. they’ll communicate to ur sm for u. idc how short staffed they are, they shouldn’t be treating u like that :/

Hi!

So I no longer work for SBUX, but I had a similar situation when I was 17, where my manager kept scheduling me for 20+hr weeks knowing I needed to be in school and often couldn't do those hours. Plus I would be scheduled like 3 6-8hr shifts back to back (typically 2-10pm Fri, 7-3 Sat, and 7-3 Sun), which was just too much of a drain on me, especially with school Mon-Fri.

I went to talk to her and told her plain and simple that I couldn't do it. Be nice and polite, but be firm that you need to work something out (mine was 12-15 hours a week max). Then change your availability (for example, 4 hours a day for 4 days a week, or 6 hours 3 days, or 5 hours 4 days, whatever it might be). This way, your availability might show 15-20 hours, but you will most likely only get scheduled for 8-15 of those hours.

For those remaining shifts you have, ask if anyone can cover, and just explain you have school and can't come in or really could use the coverage. You probably won't get all of them covered, but if you can get 2-3 covered, or even split up a shift (for example, if you have an 8hr shift, see if someone can cover 4hrs and you do the other 4) that's a start.

Don't call out, but explain the situation to your manager, and start making calls or sending texts to people to see if they can cover. Even look at the schedule, and if you're supposed to work from 5pm-10pm, see if someone who leaves at 5pm can stay until 6pm, so that you cut an hour off. It sucks, but you waited until 3 days before those shifts start to say anything, and that is really unfair to your SM to call out now, especially if coverage can't be found.

So - best advice, try to find coverage, talk with your SM, and, in the future, as soon as the schedule is posted, if there is a potential issue, reach out immediately so that there is time to make arrangements.

Best of luck!

I mean I’m 17 and work 30 hours + high school., but I don’t care tbh haha. FYI you can’t work all seven days within a single Monday-Sunday week. If you really need to reduce your hours, I’d just change your availability. School should come first and you should be adamant to your manager about that. She can’t fire you over notifying her you’d like to work part-time hours at a part time job (20-25 hours vs 35-40 Fulltime)
