Green bean with a question about potentially becoming an SM in the future. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Jared-A1
So I’ve been working here about five months now and I really love my store and mostly everyone in it. I’ve had experience with every position other than hot bar but I’m working with my manager on a good time to get some experience on that. Well anyway, I’m still a minor (17) but I hope that in the next year or more I can become an SM and hold that position throughout college. Every shift I try and go over and beyond to help people out and learn as much as possible. I was wondering what you guys would recommend I start doing or working on if I want to become a shift. Any feedback is appreciated, have a great one!

Edit: SSV not SM, I meant shift supervisor lol.

I think you mean SSV. SM stands for Store Manager, not Shift Supervisor. Best of luck though! 18 might be too young, but anything is possible if you put hard work and dedication into everything you do.

Once you feel confident in every position and know that you are up to standard, consider speaking to ur SM about become a barista trainer... keep on having that conversation with your sm; I’ve noticed that promotions are usually given when the barista is persistent about growth- mangers hire people who want to work at Starbucks and are excited and they promote baristas who want to learn and grow in the company.
That’s the next step, after a couple months training (you want to make sure you have a couple good trainees under ur belt) offer to help with supervisor roles such as the pull/count, the milk count, the temps, etc. once the leaders in your store see that you have been putting in that effort into what makes an ssv then open up that conversation with sm, explain ur situation and dedication to the company and ur desire to start training to be an ssv, and same thing with the trainer conversation,,, be persistent!

I’m 17 going on 18 as well, I’ve been with the company since I was 16 and I’ve been considering becoming a shift too, but consider all the ups and downs to it
-harder to cover a shift a times
-more responsibility to your shift and how ur closes/opens are (how will your efficiency effect the rest of the store, will it improve it?)
-dealing with call outs/covering breaks/trying to do ur supervisor tasks whilst also keeping the team focused on their tasks

Maybe consider being a barista for 1-2 more years and better understand the job nature surrounding a ssv and then decide.

I struggle with making this decision myself- moving up would be fairly easy because of my time with the company and my position as a trainer however, when working in an understaffed, fast-paced, drive-thru at times were my fellow barista tend to have a poor attitude, it skews my opinion on it. Hopefully when I transfer for college it’s a better energy.

Hope this cleared some things up and helped! I usually don’t respond to posts on Reddit but I saw some similarities between us. Good luck!

Thanks a lot for responding it’s super appreciated, yeah that cleared up a lot. Definitely gotta get bar down first before I work one training people and I’ll definitely consider all the pros and cons of moving up. Same here some people in my store are negative as well and that’s part of the reason I’ve thought about moving up, I wanna be someone who’s positive and is understanding compared to home some of the other people have been. Thanks a lot for the answer as well, it’s cool we have a lot of similarities and I didn’t even know Starbucks hired at 16. Hope the store you transfer to has a more positive vibe and if you want at the point them you get to move up to a SSV. Wish you the best and thanks for the detailed response!
