I applied to be a barista at multiple stores. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Adelarosa92
I got an email offering me an interview through the meetings app.
I applied to 6 different stores and the person who emailed me told me she was in charge of the hiring in my area.
The woman that sent the email said she would be in for the interview but when I was on it ended up being two different people.
We talked and we laughed and everything was going great, the interviewer even said this went so well.
I got an email the following day saying that they had decided to go with other candidates.
Any body that does hiring know why they could have possibly not hired me?
I’m thinking about calling the two top stores I wanted to work for individually and asking to speak to their store manager.
Any suggestions or input?
Thank you.

This is a good idea, but maybe not for an entry level retail sales position! I'll get to why that is in a second, but I wanted to start off with that. Managers are quite busy though, so you may be better of emailing the manager and giving them time to respond, if they can. This can help shape how you approach interviews in the future, as well as help you move forward career-wise.

As to why you likely weren't hired - with it being entry level, they literally hire 16 year olds with no experience, you know? The biggest thing management bases hiring on is availability. What does your availability look like? Some stores target specific day parts, like only looking for openers. Others want people with completely open availability, which I've found to be the most frequent request. At Starbucks, you are always considered part time unless you're an assistant manager, or a store manager. Otherwise your hours are never guaranteed and can fluctuate.

Another thing they look for is customer service. If you were standoffish or hard to communicate with, not enthusiastic, etc. they may stray from hiring because they want people who can perpetuate the Disney-level of happiness in stores. You said you talked and laughed and it was fine, so I'm sure you were fine there!

My money is either on availability, or they prioritised a transfer/someone with Starbucks/barista history. It sounds silly, but that's sometimes just how it goes! I'm sorry you didn't get in.

Fortunately Starbucks is **always** hiring, so I would honestly say give it some time and reapply in a couple months, or just keep trying at other stores if you have a lot local to you!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I really appreciate it. My availability is open and my customer service is great. I’ll wait a little bit and see if I should contact the Store manager again. I guess I’m probably just too old (29)haha. Thankfully I have a job at the moment so if Starbucks is meant to be I’ll get in. Again, thank you so much for responding with so much information and I completely understand how these hiring processes go. Cheers!☕️

When I was hired back in early 2017, i worked with a man in his 60s, a woman in her 40s, a guy in his 30s, multiple people aged between 18-27, and shortly after I was hired, a couple of 19 year olds were hired. When I left in early 2019, the guy in his 60s was still going strong c:

Starbucks doesn't usually discriminate against older people, especially not at 29! If anything, I usually find that they tend to stray away from minors, but only due to labour laws.

I would say keep shooting your shot and see where it gets you! But don't bank on starbucks - spread your net wide!

I took your advice and 77 days later after being turned down to be a barista I decided I was going to dip my toes in the healthcare field and I became a CNA. Got myself a little job security and I’m already working in a post acute care center and I’m really enjoying it.
