We’re starting next week having a morning and evening crew so there’s minimal midday overlap. Anyone else’s store do this? Does it work? Kind of seems ridiculous but I know they’re doing it because of covid.

We are using blocks schedules. Morning crew leaves at 12. The only overlap is when the afternoon crew comes in to take over. So very little exposure between the two crews

I just feel like you’re bound to have someone be a mid shift. Is it you’re always morning or evening crew? Like are you going to be strictly one crew or will it switch it up?

You have to allow a day off in between a morning and evening shift at our store. They won't schedule you one right after the other

Generally I’m mid shift/pre close so I don’t open or close except on rare occasions.

We have some come in throughout the morning but they have to leave at 12 with the rest of us. Afternoon shift leave throughout the day

My store has done this for a couple of months now. It mostly works considering the availability of the partners at my store, however it inevitably overlaps and there’s really not much anyone can do about it.
Reasons for overlaps may include: -Partners that have to self isolate because of exposure -Partners that need/want to switch shifts because of school, family, Etc -New partners that are training based on trainers schedule, but have entirely different availability
At first my SM was very stern about not overlapping and making sure we put any changes on the schedule online, but after just a couple of weeks of this block scheduling, she saw how almost impossible doing so was.
Another thing is on the app, there isn’t a way to give away your shift to a partner who isn’t scheduled for that day. So if I’m working 11-3:30p and I was Kim to cover me, but she isn’t working that day, there’s no way to input this in the app as a partner. It’s pretty silly.
I actually prefer the block scheduling because it has given me a more consistent schedule, whereas before was chaos because my SM didn’t particularly honor your availability. Now, I close during the weekdays and have opening/mid-shifts on the weekends. This is similar to my availability before, except I always know when I’m going to close, mid and open. Which is how I prefer things.
Hope this insight helps!

This helps very much. I’m essentially the only one who uses the app at my store and if we switch we just text our manager and change the DCR. I would love a more consistent schedule but like I’m looking at my schedule next week and it’s not much different than this week. I just don’t see the block.

We’ve been doing this for several months at my store. It works well regarding exposure risks and such.

My store does this! Since like may we’ve had an AM and PM block. We’re a small cafe in a college town and for this semester, we’re starting a three block schedule - AM, mids, and PM.
It’s been really nice so far, we just make sure to have a good handoffs. As long as each block is running like they should, it’s not an issue. Just a lot of relying on each other, which we do anyway

My store started doing block scheduling in the beginning of December when we finally had enough partners to do this. I ended up being on the midday block.
Let me tell you, it’s crazy.. at least for my store (brb dying on the inside lol). Even tho technically we have enough people to block scheduling, at my store, midday definitely gets the short end of the stick. My store is usually stupid busy during the midday and my SM usually has only 3 people (1 SS and 2baristas). Sometimes there’s only 2 of us in the store. We usually dont get out 10s. But it’s fine. We understand that it’s temporary.
Thankfully it’s a short shift, so it’s bearable. But it’s a constant nonstop line to the street and cafe and mobile orders lined up to the moon.
The way our blocks we set up were: Morning: 4:30am(6am)-12pm Midday: 12pm-5:45pm Evening: 5:45-10:30pm
It was fine until both closing and morning shift people had Covid positive partners and almost the entire blocks had to be quarantined. It left less than half of us.
I think it CAN work for sure. Because of block scheduling, if you do have a Covid positive partner, you don’t have to close the entire store. However, the ones that are still around are being stretched SUPER thin (I’m talking about our closing shifts sometimes have to open the next day, or opening/closing with only two people, or two people being the only ones in the store during for 4+hours). Needless to say the morale is slowly declining. On top of the fact that more people are getting sick.
So it CAN work, but I’m not entirely sure it’s the wisest move. But I’m not a SM so I really don’t know what goes into it all. I just work here lol

We had someone test positive and everyone except myself and 8 other people were out including my manager and ASM leaving us with 1 shift able to work. It wasn’t that bad we had modified hours and were DT only. One day we got slammed and had to turn mobiles off but we’ve been pretty good about not having to self quarantine or isolate. Other than that one instance no issues.

We do it but not quite how it sounds you will be I for one have some days I’m morning and some days I’m night and I would be screwed if I couldn’t work both so we do blocks where everyone leaves together for example the morning block leaves at 1pm night block comes in at 1pm We have shifts over lap for 15min and one barista overlaps for 15 as well so you can transition with out a complete stop in everything plus gives us a second if someone is running late
rio8envy7 [OP]2 points2y ago
I just heard about this today. I don’t exactly know how they’re going to do it yet. It’s near impossible to not have someone midday.
Mommy2SNP2 points2y ago
Maybe your store will have three blocks but everyone leaves together for lower exposure if someone gets sick- then the store can still operate with out those “exposed” partners.... it has shown success in our district- it’s frustrating at first but we have all adapted
rio8envy7 [OP]2 points2y ago
The reasoning makes sense. We haven’t had too many issues with our partners being exposed or having to close. Maybe once there was a situation when there were like 8 of us who were able to work but that was only a few days.
Mommy2SNP2 points2y ago
Yea we have had three cases at our store which honestly isn’t too bad (we are on a college campus) but the first two took out basically the whole store other stores have had more frequent cases as of late one store has had to close a whole week because too many partners were exposed for them to operate (didn’t follow block schedule). Where as other stores just close for their day of cleaning
