what is starbucks stance on allergies?(self.starbucksbaristas)

so i have a milk allergy and i know that there’s a contamination risk when ordering drinks. is there any way i can have my drink made on non contaminated equipment so there’s no cross contact?

you can ask for a fresh steaming pitcher/blender/shaker, but the steaming wand will still be contaminated. starbucks basically says we will do what we can but you will always have cross-contamination

I always tell people that if the allergy is deadly, to just make coffee at home. If someone were to come into my store and request we used completely uncomtaminated equipment, we would not be able to. We have just enough steaming pitchers, shakers, and blenders to keep at each bar and on the floor at all times. There are no extras. Also, steaming wands would be contaminated, and the Sani rags we use to clean the Wands are contaminated. Starbucks is not allergy friendly at all. It’s unfortunate, but the truth

We can do our best to use new pitchers, blenders, and other items but somethings we just can’t. I also suggest always going into cafe for this instead of drive-thru. Sometimes we can’t understand this request well in drive. The manager for my store, her sons have a milk allergy and come in and get frapps all the time. We just use new blenders

Last I can recall anything specific, baristas are meant to clean steam wands, pitchers, shakers, blenders and anything else that the drink goes in or on (lightly, with a rinse or a sanitization cloth) between drinks. We used to have specific pitchers for different milk and then non-dairy options for both steaming pitchers and blenders, but those were abandoned for no descript reason a few years ago. Unfortunately the machines themselves cant be properly fully cleaned between uses, and a lot of equipment is shared. In better times I would always offer waiting for a fresh batch of dishes but people can't comfortably wait in the cafe anymore. I have family members that have a variety of allergies so I try to have my conduct and my store be as accommodating for allergies, but people sometimes make mistakes or don't understand.

There will always be some risk of cross contamination, but your chances will be better with a drink that doesn’t require any shared equipment to make: hot brewed coffee or tea, iced coffee, or cold brew, or maybe an iced latte. Basically something where all the ingredients go directly into the cup and you don’t have to contend with a steam wand, pitcher, shaker, or blender. If you let your baristas know you have an allergy, they’ll likely take extra precautions where possible. Plenty of customers and some of my coworkers have dairy allergies (or nut, soy, etc). But still, nothing can be guaranteed allergen-free and only you know yourself well enough to decide what you can or can’t do.

I would like to do this but my store only has two blender pitchers that are always in use. So it would be easier to accommodate a hot drink. Or maybe get cold drinks that don’t touch any equipment.

Not a hot drink. Steam wands can’t be completely cleaned between customers (at some stores not ever)

Not really, no. There’s always the possibility of contamination no matter how careful we are, which is why the company never guarantees anything to be allergy friendly. Any hot drink with non dairy milks will be steamed with a steaming wand that has been used in dairy and not thoroughly cleaned between uses (we wipe them down with sanitizer after every drink but I’m not convinced that is enough to be safe). We don’t really have extra steaming wands to go around so we wouldn’t be able to use a new one even if we got a clean steaming pitcher. As someone else here said, your best bet would be to order drinks that are made right in the cup rather than with equipment that touches milk, which is pretty much just iced coffee, cold brew, brewed coffee, espresso shots, and hot brewed teas. Even then, if someone asks about allergies we always have to give the company line that nothing is free from cross-contamination, so it’s really up to you if you want to risk it or not.
