If my classes start during my shifts, can I have my phone out to be on my classes while working because my manager hasn’t said anything and I want to be sure while being in the floor?

As a manager, I wouldn’t accept that tbh. You’re there to work, not do school. I’m in college full time as well so I wish I could do that! But I guess it depends on your store?

Thank you! How would I go and tell my manager about partners doing it, which I think it’s not correct?

No, technically you are not allowed to have your phone out unless it is for a Starbucks official app, or to check the time.

Your SM may make an exception for you but I personally would not. You should prioritise school over work if possible!!

What if shifts are aware and doesn’t tell them nothing about it?

It's still kind of just poor prioritisation. You should be at work to work, getting paid to do your job, not getting paid to attend a class you're half-paying attention to.

Not to mention it can cause resentment and issues in the team. "If X can have their phone out, why can't I?"

Also if a customer calls corporate and complains, you could get into trouble as well. Corporate informs the DM, DM scolds the SM.

If you need to change your availability to make your classes, you should do that.

Your shifts are not allowed to implement policies contrary to Starbucks stated policies. They cannot give you permission to use your phone to attend classes while you’re working.

i’m a full time college student and tbh i’d just change my availability so that i’m not at work on the day of my classes.

i’ve taken MWF *specifically* off for school and me time, so that’s college and everything inbetween. it works out well, since i’ve made sure to take classes that fall on those days. it’ll differ for you, but i’m sure your manager won’t have any problems with you changing your availability for classes—at least mine didn’t!

like others have said, you should be prioritizing school before work. starbucks will fill your unavailable days with other baristas, and you’ll still work on your available days! just put school and yourself first and the rest will fall into place.
