I have been with Starbucks for almost 2 years (since June 2019). When I was hired, I was self-employed and took a part-time barista job just so I could have health insurance. This job didn’t mean much to me at the time so I didn’t even bother putting any of my previous retail management history on my application because I didn’t think it was relevant. After 3-4 months, my SM noticed that I was a natural leader and promoted me to Shift Supervisor. I still had no intentions of making Starbucks a “career” but I wasn’t going to say no to a pay increase for essentially the same job.
Well, fast forward to the great Pandemic of 2020 and I realized even more how great of a company Starbucks was to work for. I decided then that I wanted to take advantage of the College Achievement Plan and pursue a long term career with the company (either working as a DM or in HR one day).
For now, the next step in my progression is Store Manager. There are 3 stores with open positions in my state, and talks of 12 new stores opening in the coming years. I’ve applied to all 3 of the open SM positions but was immediately met with an email response informing me that “internal hires” need to contact their SM to talk about career development. So basically, despite my 8 years of retail management experience and 2 years spent as a small business owner, I can’t even get an store manager INTERVIEW simply because I started out as a barista?
I’ve been working on my PDP with my Store Manager, I’ve been taking on more responsibilities at the store, I’ve been learning more of the admin/operational responsibilities and I even trained 25+ new partners at a brand new store earlier this month.
My SM has said REPEATEDLY that he believes I’m ready, but hasn’t set up an interview for me.
HOW THE HECK do I get an interview?!?! I’m getting extremely frustrated because I’ll be 28 this year and my husband and I are looking to buy a house/start a family soon. My husband makes pretty good money, but has $120k in student loan debt. So we can’t get approved for a mortgage until I’m making more than $14 an hour.
I love working for this company, but I genuinely don’t have time to wait around and continue to put off starting a family.
Any suggestions pleaseeee 🙏🏽
