Question for baristas of 1 year+ (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nightkat89
Do you even work at Starbucks if you haven’t cried on the floor from a mental breakdown because you’re extremely understaffed and your store manager won’t do a single thing about it?

I don’t cry on the floor anymore. But that’s because I’ve gotten really good at disassociating while at work. I do the majority of my crying during my post-work shower.

You know? That works. Impressive amount of control
lewabwee 8 points 2y ago
I just stopped caring. Customers can wait. If it isn’t my fault and I can’t solve it then it also isn’t my problem.

Recently as playcaller, I’ve been checking in a couple times a shift with baristas to make sure they’re still taking a minute (outside of their tens!) to step aside and have some water. I’ve been trying to remind those that seem especially stressed, that we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, and the customers know that! if they have to wait 20-30 minutes for their coffee, they just have to deal with it, because it’s not our fault. call-offs and unforeseen changes are out of our control and we’re all just doing our best!

Most customers don’t treat it like we are still in a pandemic sadly

It’s funny how I watched hell kitchen. They said: You don’t cry here, you cried in the walk-in lmaoo. But usually I just cried when i took the trash out or washed the dishes/ bathroom break etc 🥲
nightkat89 [OP] 5 points 2y ago
Dish crying is the best! You can always say you splashed water on your face accidentally
spicyspinach 3 points 2y ago
Yup!!! And the blush/ red is from the steam of the dishwasher lmaooo

No. Lol

I used to, then I transferred, highly recommend if you can

See that was my original plan, but my SM is making that an uphill battle. I’d prefer not to leave the company but at the rate it’s going I’m probably going to

Try talking to pcc and seeing if they can provide advice to help
nightkat89 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
They’ve been little help tbh. Usually it’s “talk to your district as your point of contact if you’re uncomfortable with your SM”

And my District gives me the “go talk to the other parent” talk even after mentioning I reached out to PCC
nightkat89 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Their advice WAS my SM sadly. I think I might have a lead but have to wait till Monday for admin day of this SM I’ve talked to.

I wish you best of luck! Hopefully you’ve checked out your future potential location thoroughly so you don’t get placed in a similar scenario

Weed helps a lot lol

95% of my store smokes. I think the reason the siren doesn’t test is they would lose over half their employees.

Uuuhhhmmm no. However- the fridge/freezer is a cool off spot for me. I’ve learned to use my frustration productively, so when I’m tense I’ll move to oven during our busiest rushes. Things can get a little overwhelming though and when it’s a mood thing, or I’m off to a rough start,I have to step to the fridge/freezer and take a minute to disassociate and reacquaintance with myself.

Welcome. You have to think in the back of your mind...this is just coffee & those who are irritating, frustrating, just give them what they want and move on, with a fake smile 😊
nightkat89 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I’ve been in customer service/retail for almost 15 years. It’s definitely not that easy.
juiceyluicy 1 points 2y ago
I only cry in the bathroom on my breaks.
nightkat89 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
My breaks are mw time. If my job is going to make me cry, I’m doing it on job time
keithct6 1 points 2y ago
That used to be me, then most of the people who gave me shit got replaced and now I love working with all my friends. Maybe transfer
leekyabloh 0 points 2y ago
you don’t have to be a year+ to cry on floor
nightkat89 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Never said you had to? I was asking those that had time to “get used” to the job to see if they reacted still the same way?

But go off.
leekyabloh 1 points 2y ago
defensive and for whooo? the gag is.
nightkat89 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Na, I’m only defensive when people assume things about me. You know the good ol’saying!

My store used to be so understaffed, that I basically worked 39 hours a week. It wws tough but the tips... Ooo boy. $50 a week.
