Green Bean Chronicles #1 (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hey Guys. So I’ve been working at my local Starbucks for about a month and a couple of weeks. My training is done so right now I’m focusing on how to sequence my drinks so I can be faster on bar. One problem that I have is when I’m on bar “usually drive” and I’m making a drink and while my expression shots are pouring I’ll make a frappe or start pouring my base into the shaker. And then I’ll turn around to finish my last drink and it’s GONE Aka someone already finished it. It’s becoming a pet peeve of mine because I don’t feel like I’m learning how to get faster at bar if this person is constantly finishing my drinks and then not even saying anything or ASKING if I needed them to complete it.
Am I being extra?

100% you’re completely valid in how you feel. This is also a personal pet peeve of mine. I would recommend politely telling whoever it is that’s finishing your drinks to please stop doing that. Let them know you’re trying to get faster on bar and you can’t get better if you’re constantly being helped. I like to tell people to let me drown. If I look like i’m drowning, i’m just learning how to swim.

that’s a pet peeve of mine too because when i’m on bar i have a system and certain ways i personally do things and stuff gets all out of order in my head when that happens

I hate to say this but this so sounds like me. If there’s anything I’ve learned recently it’s that you’re going to get help whether you want/need it or not and yeah it’s annoying when you turn around and your drink is gone and finished but it’s also your team helping you. You get faster by just picking up the next drink and not worrying about the one you didn’t get to finish. I’m learning to accept help and ask when I need it. I used to think it was someone trying to take over my bar. If you really don’t need help just say hey can you actually get me a new bottle of vanilla or more milk or even if like to work on my sequencing.

My intention is to not invalidate your feelings because they are 100% valid and you’re allowed to feel that way and I get it more than you understand.

Couldn’t agree more, trust me you’ll have plenty of time to make drinks. And if you really want to finish a specific drink, don’t leave it. If I see something sitting I’m gonna finish the drink to save the shots if you’re making a frappe.... I wouldn’t overthink this

Worked with a lot of people who are territorial as it were, of "their" drinks on bar. While your dedication to your craft is respectable, comrade, we must remember that we are the proletariat. Nothing is ours. Some people will try to micromanage you, some people will try to help to alleviate that familiar anxiety, some people are just looking for something to do. Remember there will be literally millions of lattes that need to be made, so that one day, when you are weary from a day of drowning, the help will come as a welcome surprise.

I HATE WHEN PEOPLE DO THIS. I literally finish my drink and watch them walk over to finish the other one I’m doing. And then I’m just standing there like if you would’ve given me .5 seconds more it would’ve been done
