If I'm fired for this, I'll update (self.starbucksbaristas)

So Yesterday, I didn't say goodbye to our Manager as she was leaving(she always insists she gets EVERYONES attention when she's leaving. I was busy, and I absolutely hate her, so I said nothing. Like I usually do. Today, she called me over to have a 'connect' with her(which always means we're in trouble) . She goes on to say that I've made her feel unwelcome and she feels 'attacked' by my behavior. So you know what? I SNAPPED. She wanted the truth from me? About why there's 'tension' between us? I started to go on about the LIST of stuff thats been wrong, how disrespectful she's been to me, and everyone in the store. I told her, to her face, that I hated her. Of course she was surprised by that. I told her how she's supposed to do her job, ive spent too many years of my life in culinary to not know exactly what all she's failing to do. I just wish she would actually listen. I spent the first hour of my shift doing this, and honestly? I feel a little better. She was really quiet the short time after that she was there.
I didn't get to everything I said, but you know what? She has more than deserved this.

Proud of you for speaking your mind esp to a shitty manager. If you think there will be any issues (if you care, I don't know your life y'know?) give PCC a call and tell them about the situation. You are totally right to tell your manager to fuck off
aLoserOfASon 107 points 2y ago
I wish I had the balls or the ovaries to do that.
conniedew 75 points 2y ago
I totally feel ya! I snapped yesterday on a shift manager who was hired as a shift manager and doesn’t know anything. He has been there for over 3 months now and should know some basics. The store near us is closed due to COVID issues so our morning rush is triple the amount. They only scheduled 3 of us during this time. I was trying to do drive thru orders, payments, make drinks for mobile, cafe, and drive thru! I asked him for help on bar and he just responded he isn’t good at it! I lost my mind and almost walked out! I told he needs to get good at it and needs to practice it is part of your job. He just walked away! He came back to me and asked if I could do a traveler order as he doesn’t know how to so I snapped said we need to talk! I stopped doing everything and had a chat with him! I felt better but doubt it changes anything and luckily more partners were coming on. I just don’t understand how you can honestly use that as an excuse to not do your job!!!

If you don't know how to fucking brew basic coffee, and aren't willing to take the 5 minutes it takes to learn how, you shouldn't be working in a goddamm coffee place.

I hate that people like that can be hired above baristas who already know that shit. Starbucks needs to grow a brain and realize shifts and managers need to be internally hired and not just to whatever random human applies.
OneRoseDark 12 points 2y ago
I was hired as a shift and given one (1) week of barista training before starting shift training. It's a damn good thing for my store that I a) learn really freaking fast, and 2) know what I don't know. I spent at least the first two months begging everyone to tell me when I screwed up so I could do better next time.

I would not have joined the team if they'd insisted I start as a barista. I had 4+ years of team lead / shift lead / supervisor experience from several different jobs and was making roughly $12/hr at my then-current job. No way was I stepping back to a $9/hr position at that point.
conniedew 7 points 2y ago
You sound like a normal individual that can handle the job. I see no wrong in hiring a shift to start but this guy does not retain any information!!
the42ndfl00r 1 points 2y ago
I'm in this same spot now. I am always asking my team for advice, and to double check things when I'm not one hundred percent sure. It makes a huge difference.
SkylerSayys 8 points 2y ago
It’s ridiculous that someone who doesn’t know how to make drinks/basic other things like travelers, can get hired as a shift.
michaela6514 5 points 2y ago
Even if they do get hired as shift and go through training, the whole point of being shift is SETTING THE EXAMPLE. You so you can grow and get better at the job! nothing pisses me off more than people who have worked at Starbucks for four plus months and they still don't know how to do most simple tasks.
sten45 37 points 2y ago
Be ready to eat some shitty schedules.... hopefully, your partners will swap with you to help
Babycakes_99 42 points 2y ago
This is immaturity at its finest if they cut a good baristas hours for speaking her truth when provoked
sten45 26 points 2y ago
You and I both know that if a manager can not fire you they cut your hours and make you work the worst shifts to make you quit, it is crappy manager 101
Digitalwitness23 9 points 2y ago
The most petty and immature people I’ve ever worked with were all at Starbucks. And they were the shifts/managers. The more well-adjusted and empathetic people were always the baristas, especially if they were new. Starbucks either turns you into a monster or chews you up and spits you out.
julieCivil 35 points 2y ago
That is so much healthier than carrying resentment. Finding your voice is a huge skill in life and it sounds like you have it. Even if you lose your job, you have your voice which is much more important.
Babycakes_99 19 points 2y ago
Fuck it. If you get fired think about it as at least you’re stood up for yourself and there are way better jobs than Starbucks. So don’t feel discouraged. And stand in your truth!
DreyaNova 12 points 2y ago
Totally fair. You can’t be a manager over highly stressed and underpaid people and expect everyone to love you. The fact that she was trying to force you to buy into the cult mentality of Starbucks was just a recipe for someone snapping at her.
DirigibleUme 7 points 2y ago
The cult mentality in big corporations like Starbucks and the like really get me. Like as a customer I like Starbucks and certain things they do. As an employee I don't really care anymore, it's just a job, and the "team work makes the dream work" that seems to be my stores unironic mantra just makes me roll my eyes all the more. Maybe if they tried making it a cult that likes to have open dialogue I'd feel a little different about drinking the proverbial kool aid.
Ofscarsandstars [OP] 7 points 2y ago
Thank you, to be honest I might not be the best about speaking clearly but I'm glad I could defend everyone else too. All my coworkers deserve better than this.
i_jlp_you 10 points 2y ago
I’m of the opinion that you shouldn’t be eager to coach if you can’t accept coaching yourself. Good for you for standing up to her! Trying to find that courage to talk with a shift of mine haha
Allison_82 9 points 2y ago
If you were to get fired for this they would be in the wrong... not you. Your manager must think the world revolves around them if they expect you to stop doing what you’re doing to say goodbye...
FelicityCecilia 7 points 2y ago
What kind of power-tripping ego do you have to make everyone say goodbye to you??? Tf is wrong with her?
Dismal_Beginning_199 7 points 2y ago
Dude respect!
GhosttMutt 6 points 2y ago
Actually it was exactly 58 minutes me and the shift timed it 👉👈
Spacemarine2142 6 points 2y ago
Lmaoooo I told my old SM, now current DM to fuck off and stop micromanaging us. She did. Sometimes just gotta put your foot down.
EliHyung 5 points 2y ago
You were absolutely right for speaking your mind, but you gotta be careful with saying you hate her, you still gotta be professional, they can separate you for that under not adhering to “Missions and Values” that you sign when you get hired, good job otherwise though
Ofscarsandstars [OP] 4 points 2y ago
To be honest, I could walk out tomorrow and be fine. I love being a barista, and I spent so many years being talked down to, I don't take to being disrespected like that, ESPECIALLY if its to the other baristas who don't deserve this treatment either. I do appreciate your kind words and worry for me though! 😊
Torminatorii 5 points 2y ago
My manager did something similar before I even clocked in and tried to reprimand me about how she felt “hurt” and “given the cold shoulder” that I would joke and connect with the other baristas but not her. Like...ma’am, you’re terrible for 1, for 2, you’re my boss not my friend, there’s a considerable power dynamic difference here.
MintyMint123 5 points 2y ago
Why do I feel I know who this is... have we worked together???
Ofscarsandstars [OP] 7 points 2y ago
There's always a possibility?
NOTcreative- 4 points 2y ago
You should reach out to your DM or f your SM isn’t living up to expectations
Ofscarsandstars [OP] 9 points 2y ago
We have for even worse issues, nothing gets resolved and we always get ignored. We've filed reports, tried speaking to ethics. It feels like no one actually wants to do anything about BOTH of our managers. They're both just...horrible. I'm moving soon, but I feel so bad for everyone else working there too.
MonstrousGiggling 4 points 2y ago
Gurrrrl, good for you. That must have felt nice afterward haha.

Seriously dude I've done similar things to this and wasn't fired because they at least had a shred of common sense and the way I "blew up" was honestly professional. I stated facts, had examples, didn't shout or use vulgar language, but was very firm with my tone and words.

However, Starbucks is a bit different so I'd honestly start sending out applications if I were you, sorry. You might not get fired, but you may get suspended or have your hours cut painfully. Good luck though!
Dismal_Beginning_199 4 points 2y ago
I’m about to do the same with a coworker
Voxxyvoo 3 points 2y ago
arent you guys that store that had like 3 people call out for covid symptoms and the manager telling you all to stay?
nightkat89 3 points 2y ago
I just had a similar conversation with my SM, long story short... my transfer got approved
krystilena 3 points 2y ago
If your manager doesn't treat your conversation as a learning experience for herself then she shouldn't be in leadership.
star_pants 2 points 2y ago
This sounds exactly like one of my prior managers... and if it is her then you'll be getting fired and she'll cry about it. Hope it's not, hope they take the constructive criticism, or you can transfer...

Should have started a union instead of this
Gingerpunchurface 11 points 2y ago
All a union ever did for me was take my money. Fuck all that noise. Having a union job wasn't any different then a non union job, except I had to pay for it.
Razza_ma_tazza 11 points 2y ago
I was in a union once and while I never used the services my coworkers did a lot. So. Positives and negatives. It was nice knowing someone had my back though.
iWantToBeARealBoy 5 points 2y ago
Unionize your individual store.

Sounds like that was a problem with that union, and not unions in general.

Edit: or maybe you didn’t properly utilize the union. Workers will always be crushed without a union. Every job should be unionized.
rlaksjvich 3 points 2y ago
This!! Exactly!
