Think it’s safe to tell my manager I’m bipolar? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by holmesianschizo
Now before I get into the discussion I want to already mention that I have a disability in my lower back from a car accident that has me already worried my manager thinks less of me. But I’m on disability now, coming back in a little over a month, and I’d like to talk to my manager and tell her I was diagnosed with bipolar one and that a regular schedule is best for me to keep a routine. Idk I’m worried, I always hear horror stories about finding reasons to fire people but I like to think at starbucks they prioritize mental health no? Do you think it’s safe to tell her my condition and look for support and understanding and that she keep it confidential? I’m a shift supervisor so I know that sometimes I’ll have to clopen or work strange hours and I’m not asking to be given freedom from that. I’m just asking if you think it’s wise to keep it to myself or tell my manager and be completely open and honest with her? I was wondering if anyone here had similar examples?

honestly, you know your manager best. if you think they'd be understanding and supportive then go for it!! but from my experience at sbux and what most other ppl say, i would probably keep it to myself. managers like to throw stuff back at you and use it against you. sbux likes to act like they prioritize our health but they rlly don't. i've heard managers laugh and make jokes about partners behind their backs )):

It really depends on your manager.

If you’re asking for a bona-fine ADA accommodation then usually you have to disclose quite a bit of info - enough to give them an opportunity to engage in an “interactive dialogue”. If you’re not entering into an ADA accommodation request then it’s really your call.

If you’re not sure about your manager, you could try being a little vague and just leave it at “mental health” condition and see if that’s enough info for her to help you manage your schedule.

It actually helped my SM understand why I act the way I do more when I told him I was bipolar. He has been super helpful and very supportive. I’m so glad I opened up to him about it!!
