When your shift asks if you want to go home early... (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by claudineisnotmyname
I learned this last night:

At least at my store, when shifts send people home early, or otherwise go under the weekly labor hours, the store manager gets a cash bonus. That is why shifts are always told to send people home early if possible, so the store manager can get some more money.

Same thing with drive times. This one drives me crazy because the store manager contributes NOTHING to the drive times, but we all have to work harder so she can get her bonus. What kind of lord/serf system is Starbucks?

It makes no sense that the person who contributes the least to the store (the store manager) not only earns more than everyone else, but expects us to work even HARDER so they can earn EVEN MORE.

Might use this POQ bonus I'm getting to buy unionizing materials...

hahaha jk

Former SM here... bonuses aren't based on labor, rather purely on sales vs. last year. It USED to be the case that labor factored into it, but that changed a few years ago. Even then, the bonus was based on your labor variance, which was a percentage range you were allowed be short/over hours vs the "ideal" schedule. You didn't bonus more if you were short hours, but you needed to be in that "ideal" range to bonus. Nowadays, managers get in as much trouble from their DMs if they're short hours as they do if they're over hours (as corporate is concerned about the impact to the business if we're understaffed... slower speed of service= lower sales and lower customer connection scores).

Okay, I'm really tired of this myth going around. The store manager bonus is only based on sales vs last year's sales. Right now, the company is giving bonuses based on the overall national sales instead of individual store sales like they normally do.

Drive times do not affect your manager's bonus.

Labor does not affect your manager's bonus.

Can your SM get on the shit list with the DM if these things go off the rails? Sure. But it has absolutely zero to do with their bonus. If your SM is cutting labor, it's because the DM told them to, which is probably because corporations this big never ever EVER grant enough labor to get things done without bare minimum staffing levels. We hate cutting labor just as much as anyone else. If your SM tells you to get the drive times down, it's because corporate sets unrealistic goals for the amount of labor they want us to use.

Maybe your individual SM sucks and is lazy, I have no idea. The only recourse you have if they do suck is to go to the DM/PRSC or to get a new job and quit. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but the SM job is thankless enough without adding motives that aren't there.

I'm sorry that your manager doesn't seem to be pulling their weight. I've been really fortunate that the 3 SM's I've spent the most time with are the above/beyond type in the way that I'm happy to bust my ass even harder now that I have this knowledge.

My current SM actually does spend time on the floor contributing to our DT times, multiple times a week. She advocates for us and prioritizes morale (aka helping us lighten up when we get a little too intense).

Store managers do a lot for the store. Make schedules, handle issues between partners and other partners/partners and customers, make sure things in the store are running properly, connect with the district and region, etc.

I’m sorry you’re having issues with your manager. I know what it’s like to have a shitty manager who did basically nothing and it’s frustrating.

This is why I got out of retail. Managers get bonuses, while people on the bottom of the totem pole barely make enough to live.

If it's a corporate store, that's not exactly true. The manager bonus is largely based on comps (sales vs last year)

JS my store manager is ✨amazing✨ and she’s the reason I came to work at this location. She works harder than anybody else and is constantly motivating us and helps us stay positive during peak craziness! Store managers should always be the example to look up to. I guess I got really lucky with mine💚

Actually not sure how accurate that is, however, we had a SM that was fired last year for sending people home early because they’re not allowed to.. but idk bc I’m not an sm lol

this is why i don’t give two shits about drive thru times, especially with covid and everything going on. we have a constantly long drive thru line every single day. also you’re not obligated to go home if they ask to send you home early. you were scheduled for that time and you’re entitled to be paid for your scheduled hours
echowolf9 1 points 2y ago
We used to have to send people home early if not enough sales were being met but that changed years ago that to were you should be using all your coverage hours everyday. Your manager should not be going under and is not getting a bonus from drive times or less labor.

Wait... you get a POQ bonus?
snowflakenecklace 2 points 2y ago
yes, you should get $50 if you were voted poq
violetskies7 1 points 2y ago
what’s the POQ bonus?
snowflakenecklace 1 points 2y ago
if you are voted partner of the quarter, you get a $50 bonus
violetskies7 1 points 2y ago
oh! do you know if this is an actual policy or if it’s in canada? i just got POQ but was never told about a bonus :)
snowflakenecklace 1 points 2y ago
congrats!!! it's definitely a policy in the us (where i work!) but i'm not sure about elsewhere. ask your manager about it! i think it's just added on to one of your paychecks, so if your hours vary enough, it may not be that noticeable.

thank you :)
