submitted by ironmanred
Hello all! I just got hired on and accepted a position at Starbucks. I have a couple questions... soo.. 1) I was just wondering what the pay rate in Texas was... I kinda just applied without knowing. If anyone knows pls let me know 2) is this job as bad as everyone makes it seem? 3) how long does it take (more or less) to memorize everything? 4) what’s the worst thing to expect from this job? 5) what’s the best part to you about working at Starbucks? 6) have you enjoyed this place more than you’ve hated it? 7) what are some tips to make this easier?

This job is exactly as bad as it seems. customers come and go and can shake you up, But bad management or insane baristas are what make people leave.
the scheduling can suck. the pay is a joke. There are a lot of details. A LOT. you will sweat and be in pain. there are unspoken rules that you will have to figure out to stay in your store, there will be power trips from shifts. There will be fake corporate speak about how this is a family and we all need to give blood sweat and tears bc we are sooooo lucky to be at Starbucks!!!
That said making drinks can be fun. You can make a customers day. You can watch fellow baristas develop and get better. You can challenge yourself.
But it is not an easy job. many many many quit in the first few months and until everyone makes $15/hr the pay will never be enough

a lot of what this person said is true but it also depends on your store! i love my crew and they keep me going most days, the occasional nice customer really feels great too. also the benefits 🥴

Hey! Fellow partner. Although I can’t answer the first one since I’m from CA, I can answer the others. This just job isn’t as bad as it seems(on most days). It is challenging though and it is fast paced. Everyone is different as far as memorizing. I will say, most partners get the hang of it with help, in a week. On their own about a month. It helps to have a lot of consecutive days working to get the hang of it. The worst would probably the customers. Not all but you do get those “Karens” and others with difficult customizations. As far as the job, the company takes pretty good care of their employees I.e. healthcare benefits, ASU, etc. Other fellow partners are also what helps make the job nice. Just please ask and ask questions. You got this, good luck.

Thank you so much! Are customization on drinks what makes other baristas complain? 🥸

Sometimes yes. People can get pretty complicated and or not know what they want.

Sadly I can't answer the first question either....I'm sorry :'(
To answer your questions though, the job is as bad as it seems according to the horror stories, however it does depend on how mentally prepared you are going in to this lol. I honestly applied to starbucks out of spite cause my friends said I wouldn't be able to handle it and here I am nearly 5yrs later still working behind bar! If you can brush off most things and learn to put up a brave face you should be ok. Just remember to breathe and customers are dumb AF.
It doesn't take too long to memorize everything if you're a fast learner. Once you learn the basics of everything you'll get it down within a month if you're constantly making the drinks or going the extra mile and studying the menu in the app on your own time. (There's plenty of cheat sheets in the starbucks subreddit)
The absolute worst is store drama in my opinion. Customers are bad but they can leave. You can't avoid co-workers if there's bad blood between y'all.
Best part I would say, some customers are my favorite. If you're good at talking you'll meet amazing people who may help you get a better job in the future. I would say another good thing is definitely the benefits, the benefits are the best lol
It's about equal for me. I've had just as many bad days as I did good days. The bad days haunt me more though~
Relax. Relax. Relax. Don't take everything too seriously. If you mess up on something it's not a big deal, it's a happy little mistake. And mistakes are learning experiences that'll make you better in the future. Try your best. Be honest, if a customer asks you a question you don't have the answer to like "what kind of bacon is on the bacon gouda" or some shit. It's ok to say you don't know and that you're new. (If you're curious it's apple smoked bacon. I had a customer ask me this on my first day and they threw a fit cause I didn't know).
Either way I wish you all the best! It's tough but it's fun. :D

Okay okay, so basically go with the flow and hope for the best with both customers and coworkers?

Pretty much, were trained to "always assume the best in others". There's only so much you can do as a barista. If you notice your other co-workers panicking or stressed out it's always nice to ask how you can help make their shift easier!

TX rate is $10.07 I believe. It used to be $9.15 but with the pay raise it should be at $10.07ish
