“Would you like a st-“ “UM CAN I GET A STRAW PLEASE” (i.redd.it)

When customers are rude about this, I tell them that we’re low on straws so the drinks that come with them are drinks with whip
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee 69 points 2y ago
People act like I'm an idiot all the time for not putting a sleeve on drinks that do not by default get sleeves. Like I know there's no way customers know what does and does not get a sleeve but this is still exhausting.
Kaywin 27 points 2y ago
Do you really encounter this a lot? Hardly anyone at my stores ordered drinks in short cups, and I can't remember anyone ever complaining.
medicinexx 48 points 2y ago
i do get a lot of people that give me dirty looks and ask ‘um, can i get a sleeve?’ for a cold drink.😅
iamsori 15 points 2y ago
I have a regular who has us put a sleeve on her venti iced tea,,,it’s so odd
mysterious_yams 29 points 2y ago
Sleeves by default only go on hot water based beverages i.e. americans, or brewed coffee. Anything steamed extra hot. Or any hot venti beverage.

Keep in mind I only learned about this a month ago. Because nobody actually does this
Kaywin 20 points 2y ago
I must be confused about what you were experiencing. I was a barista for almost 2 years. You're correct that the only ones that *must* have a sleeve are the ones you mentioned. But that doesn't mean a grande or tall latte *shouldn't* get a sleeve. A short cup shouldn't get a sleeve. I was trained that, generally speaking, unless you're running low on sleeves, regular tall and grande steamed-milk-based beverages also *should* get sleeves.
lorilei18 13 points 2y ago
Was also trained to sleeve any hot bev and double cup shorts. I do it automatically because usually they all want one. Sometimes people do ask for them on ice drinks to help with the sweat on the cup while holding it.
theacesm 5 points 2y ago
Although you may personally think they *should get* sleeves, it's not standard to give them automatically with anything except venti hot drinks, drinks with hot water and anything modified to be extra hot. This doesn't mean the others *can't* get sleeves; it simply means the sleeves should only be given for those drinks upon customer request. Short cups can't get sleeves because they don't fit, so if a customer requests one they get double cupped.
loosefaith 3 points 2y ago
This is true. However, my manager wants us to put one on every cup so the customer doesn't have to ask.
mysterious_yams 1 points 2y ago
I only havemaybe 1 out of 6 people ask.
bryceofswadia 0 points 2y ago
I don’t understand why people think we are supposed to sleeve cold drinks. Like, what reason would there be for that?
starhoeh 2 points 2y ago
Customers don't need to be rude about it, but some people have disabilities that make it hard to hold very cold beverages without the sleeve.
Carson-the-dude 26 points 2y ago
Facts especially when they expect it and we have the sippy lids
leekyabloh 17 points 2y ago
someone tried to jam the straw into a drink like bubble tea the other day in my store.
selenitesugar 9 points 2y ago
I lost my shit at this visual. A lot of my older customers are always like, "MY LID IS BROKEN THERE'S NO HOLE." 🤣🥴
Carson-the-dude 4 points 2y ago
Dude I’m just waiting for Starbucks to add boba tea 🧋
hautsause 14 points 2y ago
“You didn’t give me a straw!” Okay get a clue.
Ashesremindme 8 points 2y ago
I always hope that the people who act like we're dumb for "forgetting" to give them a straw drive away and then go to put the straw they rudely demanded into the cup and realize it's a sippy lid and feel stupid.
hautsause 5 points 2y ago
Sometimes i forgive people who ask politely then look down and realize it’s a sip lid and go, “oh! Never mind!” It’s happened a few times and it’s nice to realize sometimes i just expect the worst and people just don’t know yet lol
SoulOfABird 0 points 2y ago
You do realize that some people prefer to drink iced drinks with a straw right?
hautsause 1 points 2y ago
So if you read the whole comment thread you’ll realize we’re talking to each other about a specific instance where people think they need a straw, see the new lid, realize they can just drink it without a straw, and happily go off without one. You don’t have to jump in to be rude on a months old conversation.

I may or may not snap the straw then hand it out
leekyabloh 7 points 2y ago
have you tried to guilt tripping method? I talk about the environment whilst working on drinks so people feel less obligated to request a straw.

Ex: I really love what Starbucks is doing with the new strawless lids, less ocean pollution and more time on the planet for everyone.

I have been carrying a bag of washed straws in my car. I ran out this week and need to restock. I appreciate that you offer straws.

It is difficult and dangerous for me to drink in my car without a straw.

(I do like the caramel mach with no straw, I love how it stays layered, but only if I'm drinking it at my desk)

Thanks for offering straws :)
Sk8ter12345 3 points 2y ago
At least they said please😔
storietime12 3 points 2y ago
Starbucks burgers
caffeinatedcinephile 2 points 2y ago
the “please” is far too kind
sophaadoppe 1 points 2y ago
I’ve had someone wait at the window for about 5 minutes while I’m restocking. Then proceed to lean out of their car AND KNOCK ON THE WINDOW FURIOUSLY to ask me for a god damn straw. They scared the shiz out of me.
