today i saw that a barista posted a video of them making the new brown sugar drink on tik tok and it was going pretty viral. i know i probably sound like a grouch, but i already know customers are gonna start asking for it and getting angry when we tell them there’s still 2 weeks or whatever until it’s released. like please just stop posting unreleased drinks on tik tok. it’s probably against starbs policy anyways. like when do people even have the time to make these videos at work anyways?!?!

We aren’t even allowed to speak about recipes at all, let alone post about them. We can at most tell a customer what’s in it but we aren’t allowed to talk about measurements.

Do other baristas on tik tok berate these idiots, or are they all the same “secret menu looking for clout” type? Don’t have tik tok and never will, so I’m not sure. I’ve been with the company for over 8 years straight, and I’ve never had to deal with this stupid nonsense until tik tok came around. These kids are making my job more difficult and I’m not happy about it.

I remember when I started working in 2016, and people would demand “The Pink Lady” ... but the didn’t know what it was, I didn’t know what it was, I just used to put a load of strawberries in stuff until it was pink. To this day I have no idea what customers were actually asking for. This is my darkest confession.

i use tiktok (i don’t post, just lurk on funny videos and keep an eye out for drinks that will inevitably become popular) and when i come across videos with bullshit like; “go to starbucks and ask to blend a cake pop into your frappuccino ITS LIFE CHANGING” i’m quick to get in the comments and inform others we aren’t allowed...and for some reason i (and all the other baristas with some common sense) get called “starbucks karens” bc we won’t willingly break the rules and risk our jobs
i like to follow the “but it’s your job to make the customer happy!” comments up with a solid “it’s also my job to follow policy” and they don’t like that lol. so while most are in it for the secret menu crap, some of us are on there just because

I’m a licensed (franchise?) store barista and I definitely know Starbucks policy and so do most of the people I work with. We have a manager specifically from Starbucks to make sure we follow Starbucks standards. I’m sure there are baristas from licensed and corporate stores not following policies, there’s people who don’t care everywhere not just licensed locations :)

I'm glad you do, majority don't. They don't have managers from corporate stores to help and barnes and nobles, target, macy's, kroger, they don't care to teach them correctly. My manager has hired 5 people over the past few months who've been employed by franchise stores because he thought, hey! They'll already know what they're doing!
I've had to fully retrain every single one.
I'm not saying there's not people who don't care everywhere, but franchise stores are a bigger problem because most of the time they don't have anyone to answer to

Maybe franchises are different than licensed stores? I’m not really sure entirely and I can only speak to my own experience but we do have a dedicated Starbucks specific manager who we are in regular contact with, it sucks that it’s not done that way everywhere and Starbucks corporate really needs to do a better job at making sure licensed corporate or franchise stores have the resources they need to uphold the standards they set.

I'm not sure if there's a difference either and were just using different words for the same thing. And I'm actually really confused because Starbucks bought back all of their licensed stores. Like before when everybody could pay x amt of money and open their own store, like you can with chick fil a and stuff, Starbucks bought all those back a while ago. Now the only stores that Starbucks doesn't own are the ones inside other businesses. So where exactly do you work?
I know for a fact that of the DMs I know none of them have any sort of agency over the franchise stores. So there's no one dedicated to them. But they all have access to the learning and information corporate stores do. It's on the employees and managers to take the initiative to leave. Which is a mistake right off.

I went to a HOSPITAL once because my sister was recovering and the people there had the audacity to tell me that a couple shots over ice in a venti cup was an Americano. Really started arguing with me until I had to tell them im from a corporate store and then they shut up real quick to fix it. I didn't even care about the drink at that point it was the bold faced violation of the policy because they thought customers dont know better

I’m not saying licensed baristas never make mistakes or don’t know polices. I’ve had my drink made incorrectly and seen standards not followed at licensed and corporate stores, but those are just anecdotes, they don’t mean ALL baristas at ALL those locations are idiots who don’t know or don’t care about policy. We shouldn’t make sweeping generalizations about anyone.

Completely fair but I came from a licensed store to a corporate store there really is no resources in the licensed one and I was doing so many things wrong before I transferred over. It's not that they're all bad, it's just not surprising when things are wrong you know? They get treated like crap and are provided with even less.

first off, all i did was give a brief description of it and honestly i could be very wrong since ive never made the drink before. BUT... in the tik tok they literally gave the step-by-step instructions on how to make it so the recipe is definitely already out there. my reddit post with <100 upvotes is nothing compared to that tik tok with >10k likes. secondly, i posted it in a subreddit for starbucks baristas. yes, there’s probably people here that aren’t baristas, but most of us are and my post was directed at baristas while the girls tik tok was directed at customers. two very different audiences.

I think another huge issue with this is that Starbucks likes the attention. Theyll look the other way because the "leak" is hyping their releases up better than they ever could and will mean a successful launch day. Theyre getting on us big about being more active on social media, dunno about anyone else. They just made my manager get an instagram AND make the store one.

If people are in the store we can talk the new stuff up but don’t go posting on every social media platform telling people to try a new drink that we literally can’t make for another two weeks.
