I need more hours! What do I do? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by moonstonedd
I've almost been at Starbucks for thirty days! Hooray! I'm slowly getting the hang of things, and I'm really enjoying it so far, even though all the new info is a little stressful!

However, I'm having a lot of anxiety. When I got hired, I asked for around 30 hours. So far, I've been scheduled 18 to 19 a week - not even enough to qualify for insurance, which I really need. Other partners seem to at least clear 20 hours, and most have closer to 30.

Honestly, I also need the money - I have to pay bills, and adjusting to a new biweekly pay schedule is difficult. I read around the subreddit, and it looks like people generally have less hours after the holidays, which I get! But it's almost March now.

What should I do? Should I just wait until I have more experience, because I'm still so new? How can I go about asking for more work without sounding rude?

I'm so stressed out 😭 I used to work 40 hours/week at my old job, which I left for here. The company was okay, my store was toxic and bad for my mental health, but at least I had hours and insurance. I thought I would be less stressed out by having a job that I enjoy, but now I just worry all the time.

I don’t think you qualify for benefits or insurance until you’ve been there 90 days at which point I believe you have to work 560 hours in 6 months so roughly 20 hours a week. I’d talk to your SM because they should be giving you 20 hours a week at minimum to maintain benefits but you have to tell them. They don’t know who does and doesn’t take advantage of Starbucks insurance. All you need to say is “Can I please be scheduled for somewhere around 20 hours so I can qualify for benefits.” You’re not going to get scheduled for 30 hours for this time of year. Things are slow. I get roughly 25 a week but I also come in early, stay late and pick up shifts so I do sometimes get close to the 30 mark. Offering to pick up shifts or offering coverage when needed is probably your best bet honestly. My manager knows I’m always looking for hours so she texts me when something comes up and she could use extra or regular coverage.

This is the "slow" season. It's normal to have less hours

Ok thank you! I'm just super unfamiliar with Starbucks, and having an anxiety disorder right now isn't helping 😭 I'm on my last week of my old job, while simultaneously working Starbucks, so I'm a little burnt out and stressed at the moment. Having such a drastic reduction in hours is gonna be scary for a little bit, but I really hope my hours pick up soon.

Also I think the lowered the required hours for benefits to roughly around 13 hours a week due to covid.
