When you can’t even make it out of your garage and your SM asks if you can take an Uber to work. (I open)(i.redd.it)

I grew up in snowy, icy mountains. If I'm not comfortable driving in certain conditions, I'm definitely NOT letting someone else drive me around!
(If your SM ever threatens to/gives you a write up, you can refuse to sign it. Just fyi)
baristaabitchh [OP]30 points2y ago
Exactly! Not that anyone was driving for Uber at that time anyways but I’d still be worried for them too.
Thanks for the info too ☺️

What happens when you refuse to sign?
dthomp080614 points2y ago
Nothing. Signing is just saying that your sm went over the write up with you. I got written up when i shouldn't have. I signed it. Then i appealed it and got it removed.
adriansmommy1433 points2y ago
The write up still goes against yo wether you sign it or not. We just write refused to sign under your name. If you ever think something is unfair take it up with your DM!

You know sbux is money hungry when you’re out in the freezing cold shoveling snow to try and leave and instead of saying okay let’s just stay closed until conditions improve, they ask you to keep trying to get to work so we can open...
neonphoenixslayer17 points2y ago
This happened to me too! My manager gave me a paid out for the Uber. If you do decide to take one, make sure you ask for a paid out.
baristaabitchh [OP]16 points2y ago
He did at least remind me that they would pay for the ride but who the heck is even doing a driving service at 4am in a foot of snow? Lmao
neonphoenixslayer14 points2y ago
Lol same story here. The only thing available was an ‘Uber Luxury’. Paid 20$ for a 7 minute ride... wasn’t even that luxurious or anything 🤣
baristaabitchh [OP]5 points2y ago
Such luxury. Such class.
Was it some truck or 4Runner with 4WD??
neonphoenixslayer5 points2y ago
I don’t even remember.. it was 4:45 AM I just wanted to get to work 🤣
katelynn-jane2 points2y ago
Is this like a sbux policy or is your manager just awesome? I have a few baristas who live in an area that doesn’t get plowed or salted right away, so they haven’t been able to get their cars out but have been told they have to Uber to work for the past three snowstorms we had. They were pretty pricey due to the conditions and demand so they were pretty upset but we thought they had no other choice other than being written up.
neonphoenixslayer5 points2y ago
My manager is pretty fricken cool I will say. Not sure what the policy is but NOT showing up to work because of a snowstorm is a pretty valid reason.. to me at least. After all, it’s just coffee. Safety over anything always. If they want us to come then they can pay for the Ubers :) Obviously don’t abuse it, it’s an honor system. As for the paid out it counts as Partner Relations or Mileage.

Thank you I appreciate your help, I’m gonna talk to my manager about it and see if there’s anything we can do at our store. Our DM apparently just created a policy that anyone who calls out due to bad weather is getting written up now no matter what, even if we can’t get an Uber. Thankfully I have a Jeep but a lot of my baristas have been struggling with it because we’ve had a couple back to back bad snowstorms recently and the roads have been insanely dangerous. I have a pregnant barista who just said she’s gonna be accepting the write up next time because it’s not worth risking a car accident. It’s so insane that they’re doing all this over coffee, especially since the store is dead when the streets are that bad anyway.
neonphoenixslayer4 points2y ago
That’s REALLY messed up dude, I’m sorry. If my DM did that I would go straight to corporate. All the best and if you have any more questions please reach out. Sending good vibes!

Happened to me last week. No Ubers in the area. Tried for like 3 hours until I have up. Sent screenshots of "No cars available." What a damn nightmare. Sorry, homie.

My favourite part of living in the middle of a rural area and needing to get to work early in the morning was there being 1-2 drivers in the area, getting matched with one, only to have them call me and realise it was only a 10 minute ride. Boom, immediate cancellation, and then I'm either late to work while I wait for an actual ride, or I just don't go in.
Then in the time it took for that driver to fuck me over, the other driver went out of range/picked up another rider.
That's the kinda shit that always made me want to tell my SM "if you so desperate to get me into work, why don't you come pick me up?" like cmon. lmao
baristaabitchh [OP]3 points2y ago
Yup.. I wasn’t even going to keep trying and waste my time. I did also send screenshots to prove that I really couldn’t leave. (Not that we should have to)

thankfully when we had a bunch of snow and ice the other week our store just closed for a few days until conditions improved.. we were all literally snowed in and some people had their cars almost completely concealed in ice / snow 😂
baristaabitchh [OP]1 points2y ago
Dang that’s bad! I was honestly hoping we’d be closed at least for the first 1/2 of the day until roads had improved but nope..
Donald260693 points2y ago
It’s the NICE Car for me.
conn6633 points2y ago

Of all of the people at my store, I live the farthest away (like 30 miles in comparison to everyone else’s 5) and I grew up (and learned to drive) where there was no snow so I have been through 3 winters that I have driven in snow. I am terrified to call out because of weather since we’ve had people get written up for that. I have been lucky that all of my shifts so far have landed on days that weren’t the worst weather wise. But I have literally shown up to work during a blizzard.
baristaabitchh [OP]4 points2y ago
That’s ridiculous that people are written up for that...we honestly shouldn’t have opened until later this morning when streets were plowed and whatnot. I felt so guilty calling my SM but I genuinely didn’t know what to do. I also hate calling out so I was shoveling snow outside at 4am still trying to get to work 😂
